This song is about River Phoenix, who was a good friend of the band. Most of the lyrics are pretty self explanatory. The end seems to be about the media hiding the actual human aspects of celebrities. Green Machine = Money machine?
Yeh, Flea did write it, River was a friend of the band, but especially Flea. He was in the ambulance with him when he died. Very sad, great actor, and deserves a great song like this to be dedicated to him.
This song as well as Rufus Wainwright's Matinee Idol were written about River. R.E.M.'s Monster album is dedicated to him. He had a great impact on the music and the cinema world in his short years.
