Mirror Song Lyrics
Mirror Song
I know that I should think about giving
And think about
Helping out
And think about
Think about living
But I can't seem to rescue myself
What about my bank account
And my holy desert shield
That keep me dry under the arms?
Flags and mental jewelry's all I know
And they keep me happy and warm inside
So I said unto this man
"Who are you and where do you come from?"
And he proceeded to tell me many things
But I said nothing at all
For the flower in the corner, by the room,
In the window, and the sun
Sait it all
At least they said they would
Said they could
Mama said they would
Do me good
And think about
Helping out
And think about
Think about living
But I can't seem to rescue myself
And my holy desert shield
That keep me dry under the arms?
Flags and mental jewelry's all I know
And they keep me happy and warm inside
"Who are you and where do you come from?"
And he proceeded to tell me many things
In the window, and the sun
Sait it all
Said they could
Mama said they would
Do me good

This song reminds me of the illusions we create in life. How these illusions give us a false sense of happiness and entitlement. It's all "flags and mental jewelry". We use these bank accounts and desert shields to keep life at bay.
This song perfectly describes the place I find myself in today, at this point in my life
This song reminds me of somebody that I used to know. All heart, but in the complete wrong places; as if it would somehow make up for the course of actions that life can take. So I said unto this man... for the flower in the corner by the room in the window and the sun, said it all... But what about my bank account? I am the sum of all my actions; not to be valued by a currencey figure. Not to be "holyer than thou". Not to be #1 in the world. Just myself, and my choice of actions... Although, I can not say "I said nothing at all" anymore. :)

Operation Desert Shield was part of the Gulf War. It was supposed to be a defensive mission to protect our allies in Saudi Arabia, under the first Bush presidency. It turned into one of the most one-sided violent offensives in our history. It consisted of several thousand combat missions and hundreds of thousands of troops with countless civilians killed in the name of military attacks along with blasting Iraq and Kuwait back into the Stone Age.

But it was supposed to be a good thing, to America. Our God Given obligation to stop Iraq from conquering Kuwait and eventually Saudi Arabia. Ultimately however, our methods caused massive devastation to the very area we claimed we were trying to protect.
Most violent? Produce your facts or shut the hell up. You are SO full of shit, and sadly people blindly buy into such bullshit.

Iraq invated Kuwait and we worked with Kuwait and other countries to get Iraq out of Kuwait. It wasn't a defensive mission other than to get Saddam out of Kuwait. We didn't fucking blast Kuwait; we blasted Iraqi troops. Learn your goddamn history before spewing your anti-American shit on this site.

The line seems to refer to both physical and spiritual luxuries he's been afforded. "What about my bank account"- money acribed to being root of succes/pleasure/self-worth. "My holy desert shield"- Holy is the tip-off here: Many of Live's other songs at this time either raised uncertainty or doubt about God or religion. Wars have been fought with the impetus that God or religion will literally shield "his people" from death or destruction or other misfortune, while at the same time "blessing" them with victory.

Long story short- a "desert shield" in this case is probably the (questioned) security provided by religion or spirituality.

this is one of my favorite Live songs. i get from it a perspective of going through life being controlled by the pursuit of money and material things. While on the flip side you can truly live life for what it is and experience many many many things which is worth more (to me anyway). the part about the flower in the corner in the window in the sun seems like that is what the person related too and all he knew about was stayin in one place ruled by the same comforts he surrounded himself by
"so I said unto this man "who are you and where do you come from?" and he proceeded to tell me many things but I said nothing at all"
I guess this "man" is actually him talking with himself trying to make sense out of life..
