I Don't Know Anything Lyrics

I don't know anything
I don't know who I am
I don't know anything
I don't know who to be
Why we have to live in so much hate everyday, oh yeah
Why the fighting and the coming down, am I sane?
I don't know
I don't know anything
I don't know who to be
I don't know anything
I don't know who I am
Why we have to live in so much hate everyday, oh yeah
Why the fighting and the coming down, am I sane?
I don't know
When the teacher put the ruler down on my hand
I laugh!
Cross my heart and hide reliever in trails of blood,
I love?!?
I don't know anything
I don't know who I am
I don't know anything
I don't know who to be
Why we have to live in so much hate everyday, oh yeah
Why the fighting and the coming down, am I sane?
I don't know
When the teacher put the ruler down on my hand
I laugh!
Cross my heart and hide reliever in trails of blood,
I love?!?

Jim Carrey once said that "none of us is really in control of our lives. Anyone who thinks they are is full of shit". I think that kind of idea is in this song. Maybe Layne is asking "does any of us really know what we're doing here, and how to do it right?" There is a kind of an underlying question here "what is love?" With everyone destroying themselves and others ("why the fighting and the coming down?"), have any of us really felt love?

Yeh, and then Jim Carrey did that sketch to "what is love" so that has meaning too.

Sorry..

I think it's about how pointless love is, because there is so much hate in all of us.

I think Layne is saying (I'm agreeing with all U guys) that he doesn't know what or how 2 love, not that he doesn't know anything like he's retarded. The guitars are wicked 2 and the solo is killer. Introducted me 2 Mad Season, glad i did. The CD just shows how much of a great song writter he is (We all knew that anyways

i dont get why this song has less comments than the rest, its by far the best on the album. yeah definetly a good song, the kind you like the first time you listen to it. and of course the meaning, its about not knowing why things are the way they are.

I think it's about an observation that the world is full of hatred, and there's no way to fit in without losing your true self. Think about who Layne was, other than the drug addiction. He was a guy who liked to have fun, and a guy who spoke from his heart. He's asking, "Is there a good reason for all the hatred that I'm not aware of?"

So goes my take.

I think the meaning is very simple-it's about being cofused about yourself, about people and all of evil in this world. It's about being in search for a reason to live, about understanding your own existence...

Layne was so disillusioned with people and the world during the last 6 or so years of his life. It's like he lost the ability to see the good in people, and only lived through the bad. It's so sad... it's where his greatness came from...

I believe the song is about what another members replied, Layne became reclusive and couldn't relate to the world around him. Additionally, I think the song is about all of the individuals who kept trying to contact Layne for interviews after he discontinued working with AIC, in refusing to accept any of the interviews he was bad mouthed by the publicity goons, hence (Why we have to live in so much hate every day?)

The teacher with the ruler down on his hand and he laughed line is likely about Layne's feelings regarding figures of authority.
