Battle Of The Beanfield Lyrics
I thought I heard someone calling me
I've seen the pictures on TV
And I made up my mind that I would go and see
With my own eyes
It didn't take too long to hitch a ride
With a guy going south to start a new life
Past the place where my friend died
Two years ago
Down the 303 at the end of the road
Flashing lights - exclusion zones
And it made me think it's not just the stones
That they're guarding
Hey, hey, can't you see
There's nothing here that you can call free
They're getting their kicks
Laughing at you an me
As the sun rose on the beanfield
They came like wolf on the fold
And they didn't give a warning
They took their bloody toll
I see a pregnant woman
Lying in blood of her own
I see her children crying
As the police tore apart her home
And no they didn't need a reason
It's what your votes condone
It seems they were committing treason
By trying to live on the road
CHORUS
I've seen the pictures on TV
And I made up my mind that I would go and see
With my own eyes
With a guy going south to start a new life
Past the place where my friend died

This song rocks. Its about when at stonehenge, close to where a festival would take place, a bunch of bored policeofficers decided to keep "order" amongst a group of hippies by beating that brutally to a pulp. It explains how people are unfairly treated in this world by the b*****ds who govern them. "Its what your votes condone." Nice to know you live in a free country, eh?
p.s: the levellers rule!
yeah they were traveling up for the solstice, but rather than ask them to not travel through private property the police treated the travelers like animals, stealing, rapeing etc. not nice. they played it at glastonbury this year - 'this is a story from 20 years ago when some people tried to visit some stones not far from here'
I think any collective who is needlessly violent and drives people from their homes, killing innocents without giving reason deserves to have hatred incited towards them.
The levellers do, indeed, rule; however this song appears to be inciting hatred (it's clearer on the album) and that can surely never be a good thing. Any thoughts?
In fact there's lots to debate here -what else were/are they guarding? Can society function without a police force? is voting for self-serving politicians in a democratic system a bad thing given that a better way has yet to be demonstrated?
@ShineYouDiamond I believe it was the police who incited the hatred, hate begets hate. I find it remarkably reserved to be perfectly honest.

Another shamefull moment in our history.
