Cold Piece Lyrics

Been awhile and you see his face
So you can't ignore the waste
All the empty spaces
No one home, leaving only traces
Give up, go 'way
He's not yours to save
And if you decide
He's not that kind
He got a cold piece inside
Cold piece inside
Now you hear that there's something wrong
Though it's sad, he lives his song
Ever changing
Stranded on the notes remaining
Give up, go 'way
He's not yours to save
And if you decide
He's not that kind
He got a cold piece inside
Cold piece inside
In your sunshine
In your sunshine
Where's your sunshine now
Average all, let it in my son
To be, is worth the damage done
You have no halo
Don't spend your time sniffin' round dead shadows
Give up, go 'way
I'm not yours to save
And if you decide
I'm not that kind
He say, give up, go 'way
I'm not yours to save
And if you decide
I'm not that kind
I got a cold piece inside
Cold piece inside
In your sunshine
In your sunshine
Where's your sunshine now

This song IMO is obviously about Layne Staley. Its first sung from Jerry's perspective about Layne, then sung as if by Layne.

Layne of course had become a complete recluse with his crippling addictions and a rift had developed between the two because of it. This song is Jerry justifying to himself the fact that he wasn't there to help his former friend.

So Jerry is saying, yes I would like to be there to help him, but he doesn't want my help. (Give up, go 'way I'm not yours to save) Its painful to see the damaged goods he has become, (Now you hear that there's something wrong Though it's sad, he lives his song) but I'm not a saint, there is nothing I can do, (You have no halo Don't spend your time sniffin' round dead shadows)

@fatpom I agree, the fact that this is the last song on the album implies that he left what's most important for last. Also the way he sings the chorus, the lines that would be Stanley's sound a bit like his singing voice.

@fatpom definitely fits that situation perfectly in my opinion too ...

Let it be, basically, im guessing. I like how he turns it around at the end. Instead of him its I. The first part w/ he i.e."He's not yours to save" may be coming from someone else. Then the author confirms what is said possibly sarcastically. I get the feeling this is saying "It's my life, if you don't approve that is fine, but let me be,.I'll live my life how i want.

Just a guess, if someone has a better idea I'd like to hear it, I'm open to interpretation.

I think it's fairly obvious it's about a girl who thinks she can try to change a guy (to "save" him), and the guy's not having it.

Of course I could be way wrong on this, but to me, a "cold piece" makes me think of a gun. Guns are sometimes referred to as 'pieces' so a "cold piece" could be an unused gun kept in a home. I guess he might scare her off with a gun - which is a pretty hilariously absurd notion.

My Interpretation

@hoppingbunny can see where you are coming from, and definitely could be interpreted that way.
