This is a great song of cynicism. He builds up how great this night is going to be throughout most of the song and then actually talks about the night itself: they ran out of gas, everyone is getting sick and passing out on the beach...Also refer to the beginning where he says "We'll vanish in the haze...We'll grow old and lose our hair...It's all downhill from there..."
this is hilarious. the joke is lyrical and musical and beautiful. most prom themes are some bullshit about youth or timeless love. this is a prom theme that says.... this is the high point of your life. hahaha.
i love how FoW does tongue-in-cheek humor. a lot of their songs are like that, they sing seriously about something totally ridiculous. and it's such a pretty-sounding song too, if you don't listen carefully you might not even get it.

This song, makes me look and realize how this is the highpoint of someone's life, the way the music speaks it shows that many people you may never, ever see again, and you may feel abandoned but through it all everything is going to be alright

Oh this song makes me miss high school so much! It reminds me of one of the most exciting, bittersweet times of my life. This song is about what makes prom so wonderful- how awesome it is to get dressed up, dance and be with friends- to get drunk for the first time or go all the way for the first time- when everything is new and wonderful and life holds so many possibilities.
The typical prom image is of the king and queen. Fountains of Wayne subvert this in a prom song about two (male) best friends leading a memorable night together. While the girls are passed out on the beach, the friends are playing air guitar... and probably knocking back a few beers between songs.
