Sweet Baby James Lyrics
There is a young cowboy he lives on the range
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Waiting for Summer, his pastures to change
And as the moon rises he sits by his fire
Thinking about women and glasses of beer
And closing his eyes as the doggies retire
He sings out a song which is soft but it's clear
As if maybe someone could hear
(Chorus)
Goodnight you moonlight ladies
Rockabye sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
And rockabye sweet baby James
Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Lord, the Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go
There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
But singing works just fine for me
- Chorus -
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Waiting for Summer, his pastures to change
Thinking about women and glasses of beer
And closing his eyes as the doggies retire
He sings out a song which is soft but it's clear
As if maybe someone could hear
Goodnight you moonlight ladies
Rockabye sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
And rockabye sweet baby James
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Lord, the Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

i absolutely love this song. my name is bradley james and my mom used to sing it to me before i went to sleep and she would say rockabye sweet bradley james. this is one of my all time favorites
In 1981 I was driving through the Berkshires with an artist and he let me play James Taylor the whole way. I married the guy and we are still together.
James Taylor wrote this song about/for his nephew, who was named James, after him.
uncleegbert, turnpike refers to the roadway. Stockbridge and Boston are on opposite sides of Massachusetts, so that's lots of snow covered turnpike.
JIMMY T!!! all i have to say is: And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston Lord, the Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
he knows how to represent!
can you explain the comment about the turnpke etc for us english? Thanx.
The best lullabye EVER.
My mom used to sing this to me, too! My name's Megan, but I still love this song, it's very near and dear to my heart. She'd sing this for me and "Long ago and Far away" which still makes me cry all the time.
Taylor was born in Massachusetts, he went to school in MA even though his father was the dean of UNC. Not necessarily a meaning, but it's a little trivia that gives yall a bit more perspective.
Jimmy still lives in Mass and knows how to represent. the turnpike is the mass turnpike....starts in boston and ends in stockbridge. James spent a lot of time in Stockbrige...which is in Berkshire County. In fact, every summer he plays a show here!
