Brand New Game Lyrics
Saw you dropped in the slot
Saying I got a brand new game
Running down the alley with an hour you bought
From a man with no last name
Like an idiot animal
Too stupid to shame
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new, brand new game
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new game
Ape men in a cave
Painting on the wall
Nothing's going to keep
Ambition's menacing glances
And nothing's that's got it all
From gazing over to where hope sleeps
Artificially small
Like a beast too tame
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new, brand new game
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new game
No happiness allowed
Because one's never enough, two is always a crowd
I've got a microscope and a slide
And a glass eye nature made
Everything's impossible
There's nothing to do
But oppose this promenade
Push the point to oblivion
And keep turning the blade
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new, brand new game
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new game
Saying I got a brand new game
Running down the alley with an hour you bought
From a man with no last name
Like an idiot animal
Too stupid to shame
Got a brand new, brand new game
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new game
Painting on the wall
Nothing's going to keep
Ambition's menacing glances
And nothing's that's got it all
From gazing over to where hope sleeps
Artificially small
Like a beast too tame
Got a brand new, brand new game
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new game
Because one's never enough, two is always a crowd
And a glass eye nature made
Everything's impossible
There's nothing to do
But oppose this promenade
And keep turning the blade
Got a brand new, brand new game
Got a brand new game
Got a brand new game

I think this song is upbeat and sweet but the lyrics are dark and pessimistic.
From gazing over to where hope sleeps Artificially small Like a beast too tame
This part is really sad i think this is revealing that he has lost all hope and the only hope that remains is the hope that people offer him "Artificially small". This hope is worthless to him and cant make him happy.
I think what is meant by brand new game is that this is the realisation that despite what people say he will never experience true happiness. This is basically summed up with "everything is impossible", which is how he feels. This leaves him with no options to change and despite this people will still try to provide him with hope and those that do keep offering this hope are in fact pushing him away because they dont understand.
That basically how i see this song.
no comments? wow...listen to this song. it's sooo good. i heard it for the 1st time recently on www.elliottsmithbsides.com.
oh..right..the meaning. i'm not really sure, but "new monkey" refers to his studio, new monkey. maybe it has something to do with that.
i think that his 'brand new game' could be reffering many different things, but the one that sits best with me is probably something new and thrilling in his life. the reason i say that, is because this song is so full of life, the layers are laid down perfectly. this song doesn't rely on lyrics or music solely, the combination of both and the mood of the song that make it so great.
Here are some corrections:

the meaning? gosh, i dunno.
As much as I hate it when people say it on here, I think at least the first verse has something to do with, you guessed, it, drugs: Running down the alley with an hour you bought From a man with no last name Like an idiot animal Too stupid to shame
But I think its about wanting to be happy and move on from your depression (Brand New Game) but you just can't. No matter how hard you try you still go back to it. And nothing's that's got it all From gazing over to where hope sleeps Artificially small Like a beast too tame
Basically saying its not worth even trying, since its not what you think it should be.
But then thats just my interpretation. Could be anything. All I know, this song is extremely catchy. I find myself humming it in class often.
To anyone who is emotionally and sexually isolated, fantasy life is huge. One is never enough and two is always a crowd. You're always playing both the abuser and the abused in your own plays. A lot of abuse survivors retreat in their brand new game at night before they got to sleep or really whenever they have free time, like an addiction. All those girls that write slash....like an idiot animal. Where it says "eye nature made" I believe he says "I made Champaigne" - You magnify horrible things, examine them, turn them into obsessions and fetishes, make them palatable.
absolutely love this song :] and it's impossible to not feel happy listening to it
i love you elliott :]
