I think it is about being in love with a girl you think is just too good for you, see the comparisson that he lives in a shed and she lives in a nice big house? too bad for nick she doesn't have the same interest in him as he has in her, the "She said I'm sorry you'll just have to find a friend" part is where she tells him she's sorry but I'm not in love with you, you should find another girl, the end of the song is an open invitation for her to come and get to know him, because maybe he is a nicer person then she thought.

This reminds me of the story in "The Science of Sleep." About someone being afraid to get emotionally involved with a person who seems to be depressed or otherwise mentally ill. This is just a beautiful song through and through.
Nick is an absolute workhorse on guitar on this one, isn't he? I love the back-and-forth movement of the guitar and piano. And of course, Nick brings it all home with a beautiful ending. . . What does it mean to me? Well. . . the man in the shed needs help. When she tells him he'll have to find a friend, he looks to at HER to be that friend.
I enjoy both versions of this song - on Time of No Reply it is just voice and guitar.
I always love this as well as "The Thoughts of Mary Jane", with their message of asking you to respect peoples differences, and not reject them.
this song is, for its message, very similar to hanging on a star. nick is saying ''well if you really deem me so high, why am i broke? where are you (yes you!)now i need some recognition? in man in a shed nick is inviting you to his ''shed'', his world, his universe in order to think with him or maybe understund him.

This song promotes solidarity between social classes. When you look up solidarity in a dictionary you'll find something like this: "A union of interests, purposes, or sympathies among members of a group; fellowship of responsibilities and interests." Now most people will probably associate this group or fellowship with a political group or a social class. I'd much rather think of this group as all of humanity. Politics and social situations change all the time, (even if it's ever so slowly) but no matter if you are rich or poor or a lefty or a righty, you'll always be a human being.
By the way, I think that there are way too few post on most Nick Drake songs. Considering that Nick Drake has written some of the most amazingly beautiful lyrics ever, this place should be shock full of interpretations and stories about what this music means to you. As I believe that most Nick Drake fans are fairly intelligent and willing to discuss, I can only interpret the shortage of posts in one way, not enough people know about Nick Drake. Therefore it's up to you people who already know about Nick to enlighten your family and friends, and tell them about all the great music they're missing out on. In my humble opinion, Nick Drake certainly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Bob Dylan and Van Morrison, but he'll only achieve that kind of fame through word of mouth, so let's start spreading the evangel!
Definately Nick Drake's most charming song, the lyrics have been crafted with as equal care as Nick's beautiful guitar playing; to create this tender and heart-warming song. I love it! I just love the last line "you'll find that sheds are nicer than you thought". No wonder that Nick Drake stands as one of the most competant and talented english song-writers to have graced our music collections. God bless that man!
This is a song from Nick's life. He was in love with a girl in that whimsical, self-loathing way the the English middle/upper class are so good at. However, she thought Drake was too weird and sensitive, and rejected him.
