good song, under appreciated
I have listened to this lp since its release in '69. This song must be considered their signature song and it means what it says. Everyone is into "The Weight" now cause of that dumb commercial. Try "Across the Great Divide" or "When You Awake" for some good cross-sections of The Band.
on the best concert DvD i have ever seen, the last waltz, one of the only songs done the band by themselves on the DVD, simply amazing, robbie robertson is a genius....
actually, im only 14 years old, and the wieght has been one of my favorite songs.i first heard it on the movie easy rider which my mom bought me when i was a lot younger. im looking into the band because i really like their lyrics.n e way, i just wanted to agree, most people only recognise the song from that car commercial.

im 15 and ive been listening to these bands my whole life. i love this song and just the band has such a great sound to them. love it.
And I'm sixteen and adore The Band, which is all very well and good, but has nothing to do with the meaning of the song.
The narrator is a trucker or something like that, and required to travel. Bessie is his mistress who he loves for all her quirks (like tearing up his winnings from betting on a race). In the fourth verse, when the narrator says he'll call up his "big mama" but admits he'd rather see Bessie, he's presumambly speaking about his wife, although he prefers Bessie.
Man this is a great song, I recently discovered it and love it. It always puts me in a good mood and makes me crack up.
Does anyone know the meaning of the line "Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see, that's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea". Does he mean he likes it because she bends over and he can see her cleavage?
