Deianara Crush Lyrics

One day in September, you come here
You pull my head down and you whisper in my ear
And you tell me the sidewalk is as far as the world really goes
But that's a secret everybody knows

You hold my head in your hands, you say my name
How is it that though you say it some 20,000 times
Its never quite the same
and you tell me that Hercules died burning consumed by an article of his own clothing
That's something I'd rather not be reminded of

As the greek myth goes, Hercules' demise was techinically caused by his love Deianara. This song's title only adds to the idea that it's about a girl he likes (or a relationship) that may be "hazardous to his health."

Hercules killed the centaur with a poison arrow to save Deianara. Then the centaur convinced her that the blood could be used as a love potion. So when she was worried about losing him to another women she put some of the blood (which was poisoned by Hercules own arrow) on his shirt. The poisoned shirt burned through his skin and he was unable to take the pain so he eventually killed himself in a pyre.

To be more specific: Hercules mortally wounded a centaur, who as was dying advised Deianara to take some of his (the centaur's) blood because it could be used as a love potion to make Hercules true to her (like all Greek heroes, Hercules was notorious for sleeping around).

She put some of the blood on the inside of one of Hercules' shirts. In fact, it was deadly poison and burned him to death, which was the centaur's plan all along
