There is no hidden meaning to the lyrics. Billy Davey is a character from Kelly's home town of Cwmaman. He had 6 daughters, the yougest of which,is the girl in the title.(although the lyric says "Billy's second daughter") She hooked up with a local junkie and had a violent relationship. While traveling back from England to Wales, they were having a violent argument. Half way over the Severn bridge, she got out of the car and jumped over, killing herself. "the bride that parts us" literally means the the bridge that parts the Welsh from the English.

I think this song is about a girl who killed herself and now shes like a town ghost story. kinda like " oh see that bridge, billy daveys 2nd daughter jumped off that" Regardless its a great song. very sad.
this song is about a girl who jumped off the severn bridge to kill herself, 'the bridge that parts us from them'. this is definatley one of their best songs.
Amazing song, but sad. Meaning is all ^^^. I love how Kelly hits those high notes. Classic!
swoons over kellys high voice yeah.....
Fantastic song from what is in my opinion their best album, could be the severn bridge but equally given kelly's hometown of Cwmamman (one road in, one road out) could be any town that is 'cut-off' from others... brilliant
Amazing song, off definetly one of their best albums..at first i just thort it was about the obvious. But this song goes to many levels, such as..."the bridge that parts us from them" being the cultural division between blacks and whites in the past, or just some sort of division between to places. and billys daughter is represented as a hero, martin luther king for e.g. tryin to get everybody close and 'civilised' by risking her own life. anyway this is js wat i first thought, I'm not sayin it correct just my interpretation. amazin song tho!!
i have to say i disagree with you lewi15. kelly although a great lyricist and phenomenal singer probably wouldnt have meant it to have much of a metaphorical sense. he just described what he knew, especially on the first couple of stereophonics albums, and this is why i love his style. he paints the pictures so well. you have good insight though, fair play, but i just dont think that was kelly's style.
i guess that bridge people are speculating about is just a random bridge that seperated kelly's town from the town Billey Davey and his daughters lived in. (she lived near my town; the bridge that parts us from them)
maybe it's about his famous daughter 'throwing herself to dirty waters' as in, maybe heading down a bad path such as the pornography industry, and the bridge could be a sort of moral divider between us and the people who sacrifice their dignity to become adult entertainers. she used the bridge again and again, maybe that means that she regularly lived 2 separate lives - one as a famous, respectable person - the other as a prostitute or erotic actress...
and of course word gets around, and her father finds out, and now he's left with just a dream of all that she could have been...
any way you look at it though, the lyrics are so sad. hats off to the stereophonics for a good finish to their (first?) album. good stuff.
another very interesting thing to point out: the album is actually called 'WORD GETS AROUND' . . .
