Original Sin Lyrics

I've been looking for an original sin
One with a twist and a bit of a spin
And since I've done all the old ones
Till they've all been done in
Now I'm just looking -
Then I'm gone with the wind -
Endlessly searching for an original sin

You can dance forever, you got a fire in your feet
But will it ever be enough? You know that it'll never be enough
You can fly in never land and never need to sleep
But will it ever be enough? You know that it'll never be enough
It's not enough to make the nightmares go away
It's not enough to make the tears run dry
It's not enough to live a little better every day
Everything that they taught us was nothing but lies
Everything they they brought us was nothing but bribes
But it'll all be over now
All I wanted was a piece of the night
I never got an equal share
When the stars are out of sight
And the moon is down -
The natives are so restless tonight

I've been looking for an original sin
One with a twist and a bit of a spin
And since I've done all the old ones
Till they've all been done in
Now I'm just looking -
Then I'm gone with the wind -
Endlessly searching for an original sin

You can lose yourself in pleasure 'til your body's going numb
But will it ever be enough? You know that it'll never be enough
You can always take whatever you conceivably could want
But will it ever be enough? You know that it'll never be enough
It's not enough to make the nightmares go away
It's not enough to make the tears run dry
It's not enough to live a little better every day
Everything that they taught us was nothing but lies
Everything that they brought us was nothing but bribes
But the lies are over now
All I wanted was a piece of the night
It never had to get so dark
When the stars are out of sight
And the moon is down -
The natives are so restless tonight

I've been looking for an original sin
One with a twist and a bit of a spin
And since I've done all the old ones
Till they've all been done in
Now I'm just looking -
For an original sin
I've been looking for the ultimate crime
Infinite victims, infinitesimal time -
And I'm so very guilty for no reason or rhyme
So now I'm just looking
And I'm killing some time -
Endlessly searching for the ultimate crime

I've been looking for an original sin
One with a twist and a bit of a spin
And since I've done all the old ones
Till they've all been done in
Now I'm just looking -
Then I'm gone with the wind
Endlessly searching for an original sin

I'm applying for a license to thrill
Going out on the edge, moving in for the kill
They'll be hell to pay someday
So put it all on the bill
Cause we'll always be paying, and paying until
We're beyond expiration, with a license to thrill

I've been looking for an origial sin

This song is in no way looking for an absolute ultimate evil.

This song is another of meatloafs songs that seem to be bitter against the world. This is about people who feel a great injustice, who have painstaking memories and have (not by any fault of their own) lived a horrible life.

It suggests that they have commited sins to make up for the inadequacies they have suffered "It's not enough to make the nightmares go away It's not enough to make the tears run dry"

Meaning no matter how much they expel their anger on others, no matter how much sins / crimes they commit. The pain will be forever present, and youll only be looking for a bigger sin to commit, until you realise youve commited every sin possible and the pain is still there.

This is an excellent but bitter song, that basically says

Lifes a bitch, learn to deal with.

It so isn't about finding an ultimate evil. It's done in a satirical way to demonstrate that no matter how much fun it may seem to sin, nothing will ever fill the gap that being truly good does. It talks about how sin creates false promises of happiness, but in the end everyone must pay for them.

If you want to hear a really good version of this song, find the Jim Steinman's Pandora's Box album.

I get a definite vibe of world-weariness from it. Someone looking for something new ("original") to do in the world, because he (or she) feels he's already done it all–including some things he really wants to forget about. "Sin" partly for the pun with "original", and partly because of the old cliché that if anything's fun or enjoyable, it must also be sinful. (You know, like how anything really delicious is "sinfully good", even though it's not a sin to eat something tasty unless you take it to the extreme of gluttony.)

But at the same time he knows that no matter what he finds, in the end it will "never be enough" because sooner or later the bar closes, the fun stops, the high wears off, and you're left alone with yourself and your memories of the things you've done. But he keeps looking anyway because he doesn't have anything else to do.

(Someone really clever could make a great music video using clips from the new seasons of Doctor Who supporting this interpretation, as that seems to be the kind of character the Doctor has become since he destroyed Gallifrey in the Time War.)

My Interpretation

Ha! I was thinking "best Spike song ever," personally, but for approximately the same reasons.

I was also appreciating the contrast between this and a lot of Meatloaf songs where he starts from a bad background but then his soul has been saved by power chords and sex. This seems like the hangover of that belief, edging him more toward the Tom Waits school of jaded experience.

i love this song! i heard it remixed on the Tanz der Vampire OST, and it's one of the main themes. T.d.V. is an amazing german musical with music by jim steinman, and this song is put to good use on in the show.

This is about searching for something really dirty but fun. But like all vices, it just doesnt hide the pain that we feel inside. it's quite a desperate song. Sounds much better when a female sings it like on Pandoras Box!! Tc

Love the ML version. One of the few, or perhaps only, Steinman songs that are better without his direct involvment.

How can no one comment on this?? It's so good!

This is my favorite song of all time (boy does that say something about me!). I first heard it as the remix used in the Shadow soundtrack (with lyrics altered) and then found the original and loved it even more.

And yes, it's about what it's about, looking for an absolute ultimate evil.
