Amnesia Lyrics

Here, I need your help
Deliver me from myself
Take me where i'm wanted
Or make me someone else
Never mind what they said
Forget about the things you read
It was something you'll never know
Never see, never understand
Just leave it now if you can

Tell me
When they come for you
Who will there be to speak
And when they come for you
Who will there be left to speak for you?

The final solution's back in style
We are the ones letting it ride
I never knew we were so blind
Amnesia in comfort, so unkind

(Chorus)

Makes me immediately think of the saying: "First they came for..."

Such a powerful song.

Also, unrelated, reminds us that Toad can really rock sometimes. Especially when speaking out in a powerfully uncomfortable but important message.

The second and third verses clearly deride our collective amnesia of the Holocaust.

"The final solution's back in style We are the ones letting it ride"

So I would think Glen probably had a 90's genocide on his mind (Coil being released in 1997), possibly Rwanda 1994 seems likely, and by all means pertinent: there is no explanation for the world's failure to intervene in Rwanda. But I can only speculate. (Or this could be metaphorical, but I tend to doubt that.)

I do agree the refrain harkens to Niemoeller's "First they came..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came

I find the first verse and the refrain especially haunting. And the music is phenomenal, of course.

My Interpretation

About a father who (allegedly) lost his temper when the family was breaking up. Dad was hunted down as his family fell apart.
Police don't even listen to fathers once a woman calls the police. To game the court system in child custody / alimony / child support matters, women are turning the police/law against fathers (sometimes non-father husbands) in false allegations. Very difficult to disprove, the fathers are herded to prison (hence the "Final Solution" reference...a man-free family structure). Unless a father/man has a strong support system, when this happens folks look at them askew. "And when they come for you, Who will there be left to speak for you?"... Also "I never knew we were so blind"...(see VAWA/new matrix (which TtWS probably did Not have in mind when they wrote this, but) the general way we don't pay attention to what happens when families fall apart. It's just like "Tim & Angie got a divorce".
