I'm pretty sure this song's about drugs and drug-use and all that...
"hypodermic people", "pattern against user- dilated"
those all have to do with drugs, and the "pattern against user" being the pattern of how drugs work against the user or something..."dilated" is what your eyes become if you do heroine or other drugs...
I'm pretty sure it's about drugs though...

Drug users spend all their time in search of euphoria, but they are 'waiting for nothing', as there is a 'circus carny guarding the gates of heaven' - so they're stuck in a state of 'limbo abduction, just 'worming their way through distand earth'.
All this time is wasted 'cos time won't wait for them - their clocks will still be 'ticking away'
These are some of the best lyrics ever written, this song is so incredibly good. Shame they split up but at least we still have <b>Hundred Reasons!</b>
i read recently that they broke up because they were getting to big. Singer Cedric and guitarist Omar are now in The Mars Volta, and 3 others are in Sparta. Sparta signed to Universal, and is doing a giant tour w/weezer/dashboard. The Mars Volta however is on a very underground label, and isn't doing big tours, though i heard that they were working up a deal w/another major label.
i can see this song being about drug abuse...
"circus carny gaurding the gates of heaven" - circus carnies are looked down on as trashy people, and in a way the carny could be symbollic of a drug dealer, and "heaven" could be the high of the drug, thus you have to get through the gates( buy the drugs from the dealer) to get to heaven.
the part about " ..stuck in limbo abduction..." - could mean how you literally bend over backwards to get your fix.
"take the wieght out of living..." - getting high to escape reality
"wormed our way through distant earth" - earth/reality seems distant when high, and you just float through life if you're a drug addict.
a "hypodermic person," would appear to be a drug addict who "pokes fun at the living," doesn't care enough of reality to face it head on, take it seriously.
the part where the "ederly" are mention, maybe talking about experienced drug users.... many more signs seem to make this song point to addiction of some sort.....
Heroin.
When I listen to this song I'm immediately reminded of the mindset of the movie "Train Spotting". People looking out at the world critically from a subculture. Drugs and partying take the weight out of living, but if you don't take life seriously then you'll be stuck, and in serious shit. It's all about the double edged sword.
I can't say for sure, but every single line in this song seems to scream "heroin addiction". This is the song that got me through my own heroin withdrawl. I could, however, see the whole 'medicating of society' business making sense.
"let these walkers trip on endless proof" If you've ever hung out with heroin addicts (the real, hardcore ones) you'll start to notice they tend to carry themselves like old folks. the 'endless proof' is the fact that every user is conscious of what they're doing to themselves.

'poking fun at the living' is basically saying hey, there are people out there struggling to put food on the table (or their families, bahaha), meanwhile junkies could blow 80 bucks in one night just to get high. 'please lift the weight out of this...' i think is pretty indicative of when you get one of your buddies to help you shoot up. 'lifting the weight out' is when you pull out a little blood from the vein to make sure you banged it in correctly.
finally "and if this clock keeps ticking away will time be hesitated of all the minutes that were taken away..." i don't think i need to explain that junkies are deleting a few minutes (actually, probably a few years) from their lives.
Shit, i'm so glad i'm clean now. I credit this band with saving my life. Nothing made me want to get sober more than cedric telling me i was an asshole haha.

from what ive read and heard, they broke up because of there extreme touring...the last tour they had had to be cancelled because of there chronic exhaustion...how breaking up and going to another band is gonna help however, i can not explain.

I personally like the Mars Volta better.
I'm probably wrong but I always thought this song was about how the older people in our society control everything. There are so many references to old age. This always seemed like a song of youthful rebellion.
They are singing about drugs, but not the kind I think most of you are thinking about. This is all speculation but I believe they are singing about how our society is becoming more medicated. Every day some new drug comes on the market to help us put off every day hostilities that just fifty years ago would have been considered life.
For example there is evidence that ADD is over-diagnosed and that some of these children just need a good spanking, but instead we prescribe ridilin. But that's just the beginning later on in life we have even more really good drugs to help get through young adulthood on through midlife crises, the latest trend in the eighties was valium now its prozac or zoloft. The numb arm of the elderly describes a lifetime of such treatment where the hottest thing is probably vicadin for the physical pain of growing older. And let's not forget the prescription drug of choice for major abuse, VIAGRA!! Just speculation but from this perspective is the only way I can make sense of "takes the weight out of living". Hypodermic people refers to someone who chose the life of medication and the living is someone who has not. Once the concept has been grasped I think the rest of the lyrics fall into place.
