The House Shook Lyrics

safe for now
i turn around now to turn
the television drone down down
cause in the night those same sounds
amplify in my life
they spill on the floor and out the front door
and when i finished the book the house shook.

hey babe when the walls shake
we'll be halfway to the bank
hey babe when the floors quake
we'll be shaking out the take.

safe for now
every damn day a hero of mine dies trying to fly
and they lie where their lovers lie
like everything's fine
so pound on the chest and hope for the best
and i'll give you that like
like we're off the hook.

hey babe when the walls shake
we'll be halfway to the bank
hey babe when the floors quake
we'll be shaking out the take.
hey babe are you awake?

safe for now
so be sure and save us now
safe for now
so be brave and save us now.

It seems as if it's about an EMS worker or paramedic. "the television drone.. because i hear those same sounds" and "pound on the chest and hope for the best".

i love this song too! it just has this feeling too it that sounds so complicated and frustrated and so happy and warm. when i first heard this song without the lyrics, i thought it was about him and his babe committing some crime and now they were leaving town with the money and love.

I'd definately have to agree with Mallard on the EMS, especially with lyrics like, "Finished the book [of life] and the house [EMS' body] shook," and "Every damn day a hero of mine dies trying to fly." Appears to me a lover killed herself, but he wants to try and save her anyhow, "so pound on the chest and hope for the best."

More so on the suicide when he says, "and they lie where their lovers lie," as lovers so often feel the blame and guilt when their partner commits suicide. Also, the oneness of a relationship shows through with the chrorus, the constant plurality - "we'll be..." and "so be sure to save us..."
