Death's Door Lyrics
Well I'm knocking on Death's door
Will I take my rest
Among the blessed?
Mother are you waiting?
Father are you pacing?
I'm coming home
I'm knocking on Death's door
Will I take my rest
In my sunday best?
Mother are you anxious?
Father are you gracious?
I'm coming home
I've been away too long
For so long it was strong
I've been away too long
I know that it was wrong
But I'm coming home
Well I'm knocking on Death's door
Will I take my rest?
Have I passed the test?
Mother are you praying?
Father I'm saying
I'm coming home
Will I take my rest
Among the blessed?
Father are you pacing?
I'm coming home
Will I take my rest
In my sunday best?
Father are you gracious?
I'm coming home
For so long it was strong
I've been away too long
I know that it was wrong
But I'm coming home
Will I take my rest?
Have I passed the test?
Father I'm saying
I'm coming home

it was also on a soundtrack for a Wim Wenders film, Until The End of the World, I think.
Martin's voice is very beautiful.
Lovely song... was this a SoFaD B-Side, or was it just in the credits of Devotional? That's the only place I've heard it...
...anyway, it's pretty obvious what it's about. A family's son dies, after being abroad living his own life, and now he's coming back home in his coffin to be buryed.
Mart's voice is so beautiful on it, though..
@mopo976 Hi there...although it''s now 12 years since you asked the question, someone else may benefit from my response. As I did with EVERY single DM album, single & box set back (Including my favourite box set - the Japanese only X1 & X2 boxes of 4 CDs each that cost me about $1,500 AUD back in 1991) in the '80s & '90s, I first heard this upon the "Condemnation" CD single that I purchased, from the SOFAD album.

Yep, the film is Until The End Of The World. Never saw the movie, but I brought the soundtrack just for this song.
I first heard this during the credits on the Devotional DVD. Martin's voice is beyond gorgeous. I sat there and cried like a baby while listening to it.
The meaning of the song is not subtle, which is almost refreshing considering Depeche Mode's lyrical history. A child, guilty of leaving family back home, dies just as his parents did and 'comes home.' ("I've been away too long, I know that it was wrong.")
I am sorry that I cannot remember a source to cite, but I always heard that the only live version of it exists as Dave Gahan had a medical emergency during/just before a concert of theirs, and Martin, Andy, and Alan chose to play this song with him in mind. (He was "knocking on death's door" through his addiction.) However, I cannot find other evidence to back this up, so it may be incorrect and/or a misinterpretation.
