Susan's House Lyrics

Going over to Susan's house, walking south down Baxter Street - nothing hiding behind this picket fence. There's a crazy old woman smashing bottles on the sidewalk where her house burnt down two years ago; people say that back then, she really wasn't that crazy.

Going over to Susan's house
Going over to Susan's house
I can't be alone tonight

Down by the Donut Prince a fifteen year old boy lies on the sidewalk with a bullet in his forehead. In a final act of indignity the paramedics take off all his clothes for the whole world to see while they put him in the bag. Meanwhile an old couple argues inside the Queen Bee; the sick fluorescent light shimmering on their skin.

Going over to Susan's house
Going over to Susan's house
She's going to make it right

Take a left down Echo Park, a kid asks do I want some crack
TV sets are spewing Baywatch through the windows into black

Here comes a girl with long brown hair who can't be more than seventeen. She sucks on a red popsicle while she pushes a baby girl in a pink carriage - and I'm thinking, "That must be her sister. That must be her sister, right?" They go into the 7-11, and I keep walking

this song is about the tragedy of life. period.

I agree with this interpretation. What I felt from the song and the video was that E simply took a walk down his neighborhood streets and did nothing but observe. He identified the problems everyone goes through, the ways people try to cope with such problems, and the complete unpredictability of life (remember the murdered child).

I think it's more of a social commentary on the way society is by saying the things he sees when he walks to someones house.

homicidalseal is right. It's pointing out that society is going down the gutter. Susan is someone who cheers him up, I guess. Great song though.

someone who sees some bad things in society he lives in. it isn't meant to be 100% literal like most of E's songs, just I think, meant to be a pastiche of he thinks are just some things that get him down about the society he lives in, susan is a friend or girlgfriend or whatever who makes the world seem a better place, sooths him just being around her, keeping his mind off the bad stuff, I can relate.

I think this song is about his take on America. Hes talking about all the bad aspects of what he sees and hears around him. Susan is his release from this. Perhaps his girlfriend. What I notice with the music when he mentions Susan the music changes to upbeat in a sort of patriotic way.

My Interpretation

"Here comes a girl with long brown hair who can't be more than seventeen. She sucks on a red popsicle while she pushes a baby girl in a pink carriage - and I'm thinking, "That must be her sister. That must be her sister, right?"

E has later said he regrets that part. It does seem rather self-righteous.

"I'd been jotting down things that I saw happening in the neighbourhood. This song was definitely something new for me; reaching outside of myself for a change." -E
