Merry Go Round Lyrics
A "hush" was the first word you were taught
and they watched you wear
the clothes they claimed they bought
they brought you down
to watch the merry-go around
In fall, you knew how much
a trouble doll around your neck when you lost
you wouldn't make a sound
but I could hear your little heart pound
and I watched your feet slip off the ground
Merry go round in dreams
writes 'em down, it seems
when she sleeps, she's free
merry go round in dreams
You wake to another day and find
the wind's blow'in out of key with your sky
only you can see
and the rain dancin' in the night
everybody stands around in daylight
Merry go round in dreams
writes 'em down, it seems
when she sleeps, she's free
merry go round in dreams
and everybody thinks she's sick
she's got two worlds she can pick
and she's sad
Hush is the only word you know
and I stopped listening long ago
they ignored me with a smile
you as a child
but the trouble doll hears your heart pound
and your feet say goodbye to the ground
Merry go round in dreams
writes 'em down. it seems
when she sleeps, she's free
merry go round in dreams
Merry go round in dreams
Merry go round in me
Merry go round
round and round in me
Merry go round
round and round in me
repeat
and they watched you wear
the clothes they claimed they bought
they brought you down
to watch the merry-go around
a trouble doll around your neck when you lost
you wouldn't make a sound
but I could hear your little heart pound
and I watched your feet slip off the ground
writes 'em down, it seems
when she sleeps, she's free
merry go round in dreams
the wind's blow'in out of key with your sky
only you can see
and the rain dancin' in the night
everybody stands around in daylight
writes 'em down, it seems
when she sleeps, she's free
merry go round in dreams
she's got two worlds she can pick
and she's sad
and I stopped listening long ago
they ignored me with a smile
you as a child
but the trouble doll hears your heart pound
and your feet say goodbye to the ground
writes 'em down. it seems
when she sleeps, she's free
merry go round in dreams
Merry go round in me
Merry go round
round and round in me
round and round in me

a song about paul's sister mary. in the first verse "they" refers to paul and mary's parents. great song, those harsh judgemental words from paul are a nice counterpoint to the soothing melody
Always thought it was: "And everybody thinks she's sittin' / She's got two worlds that she can fit in."
It’s how it is being raised by a narcissistic manipulative mother. You’re supposed to look and act how she wants you too and keep your opinions to yourself. He stopped listening long ago but she wanted to keep her mother happy by trying to be what she wanted and daydreamed about being free from it. Sounds like my mom

I believe this song is about a shy young girl who gets teased by her classmates because all of her clothes are from second hand stores or garage sales. "And they watched you wear the clothes that they claimed that they bought." "In Fall, you knew how much it cost" When school starts up in the fall most kids get to go shopping for new clothes. The girl in this song did not and it made her sad because she just wanted to fit in. I know the feeling, when I was a kid most of my clothes were from garage sales. Once when I was around 12 this girl came up to me in the lunchroom and said "My brothers shirt fits you well."
