This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

I see I've been mentioned a few times by a few other reviewers, and not in a good light. I deserve all of that.
2006 me was maybe a bit of an idiot. I'm not going to do any sort of thorough assessment of this song or any of the others I've said stupid things about, but I will say that Money for Nothing has grown into one of my favorites and I enjoy it in its full length form, inclusive of all original language. My tastes and opinions on social issues have evolved. Censoring artwork is not cool and I'm disappointed in myself that I was ever cool with it.
