This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

OK, I will clarify.
By 'intro' I mean the not-at-all musical section of the song (about 1 minute, 10 seconds) where the lyrics are "I want my MTV".
The GUITAR intro (after the garbage intro) is fantastic. With the exception of some ZZ Top numbers, I haven't heard much better guitar work than this song.
And the lyrics DO have no depth. No offence to JustChillen intended, but the only people I've found (in person, not online) who see depth in them are burnt out drug addicts.
DEPTH refers to significant meaning. Something insightful. It's difficult to describe, but easy to identify. And this song doesn't have it. That doesn't mean it's not a great song (did I say that? Hell no), it just means the lyrics have no depth.
JustChillen, you turned what I said around completely. This is one of my favourite songs (definitely not THE favourity, but one of them), and you made it seem as though I was insulting it. I definitely wasn't.
The simple facts are these: -Lyrics: no depth -Music: excellent -Fag: used as common insult, and as such this version of the song should not exist anymore, unless we're about to dis-associate the term 'faggot' with homosexuals (which I can assure you will not happen anytime soon).
