With all the volcano references in this song is it any wonder Gord's singing about rock. Rocks in the traditional sense, but also friends and people in our lives the we consider "a rock" some one who is always there to help us and make us feel better, and never asks for anything in return. The problem in life is where does the rock turn when they need some support?

I think this song is about some one telling another person who is percieved as a rock that it's alright for them to depend on other people, and all they have to do is ask.

I also like the last string of lines right before the "alone" part. Seems to me like these are just metaphores for life (I especially like "the sweet betrayal").

I agree with you, BamSplat. But I think you may have missed the most important part of the lyrics- the very last word. I think it should have been punctuated with a question mark as well. Gord says it, "Hello?" as if looking around for all the people he was saying he can depend upon; I think he's making an ironice statement that we actually are all quite alone in a sense.

This is one of my favorite hip songs. Gordie talked abut this song on the world album premier on the edge 102 and said the band wrote this after he had received a phone call that his Grandmother was in poor health. He said he got a call and came down stairs and the song just came out. Looking at it this way the song takes on a whole new meaning. I think the first two posts do a great job looking at the song but I have a different take on the end and Gord saying hello. I was with my Grandma when she died and I feel from my own experience that perhaps Gord is saying you’re not alone and I will be there you have done so much for me or the family and I will not let you go out alone so he is says hello when others can not handle being there for a person at the end.
