Little 15 Lyrics
Little fifteen
You help her forget
The world outside
You're not part of it yet
And if you could drive
You could drive her away
To a happier place
To a happier day
That exists in your mind
And in your smile
She could escape there
Just for a while
Little fifteen
Little fifteen
Why take the smooth with the rough
When things run smooth
It's already more than enough
She knows your mind
Is not yet in league
With the rest of the world
And its little intrigues
Do you understand
Do you know what she means
As time goes by
And when you've seen what she's seen... you will
Little fifteen
Little fifteen
Why does she have to defend
Her feelings inside
Why pretend
She's not had a life
A life of near misses
Now all that she wants
Is three little wishes
She wants to see with your eyes
She wants to smile with your smile
She wants a nice surprise
Every once in a while
She wants to see with your eyes
She wants to smile with your smile
She wants a nice surprise
Every once in a while
Little fifteen
You help her forget
The world outside
You're not part of it yet
And if you could drive
You could drive her away
To a happier place
To a happier day
That exists in your mind
And in your smile
She could escape there
Just for a while
Little fifteen
Why take the smooth with the rough
When things run smooth
It's already more than enough
She knows your mind
Is not yet in league
With the rest of the world
And its little intrigues
Do you understand
Do you know what she means
As time goes by
And when you've seen what she's seen... you will
Little fifteen
Why does she have to defend
Her feelings inside
Why pretend
She's not had a life
A life of near misses
Now all that she wants
Is three little wishes
She wants to see with your eyes
She wants to smile with your smile
She wants a nice surprise
Every once in a while
She wants to see with your eyes
She wants to smile with your smile
She wants a nice surprise
Every once in a while
Little fifteen

A lot of insightful and heartfelt versions of the same story here, but unfortunately none correct. This was written directly for one of my best friends, who was 18 at the time of it\'s release, and just before the show by a few days, starting dating a 15 year old. Between "Little 15" and a few "Skateland" references, this song served for almost an entire decades worth of hilarity for literally hundreds of us.\nNot the "masses" clearly, which was only to throw off said "masses" from getting in on the actual cool kids fun. All that, while being SOLEY at the expense of my best buddy, which you could say is horrible for a friend to do, or absolutely He-frickin-stare-e-cull depending on how you see things. However, for all ye who lack perspective, let me show you the light from ALL directions.\nThe little girl, youngest of and newest to our tribe of the, still to this day, coolest people on the planet, never once, not even for a single self-esteem crushing joke, ever had to bear the brunt of the immense amount of cradle robbing, old perv, white rape van, actual criminal law that varied state to state so we could make HIM move seats on road trips, undeniable humor of epic proportions.\nAfter the first 6 months or so, SHE would even crack jokes on him about it! That took it to an entirely new level ... of rib tightening, sore faced, tear drenching, gut busting, life-long love and friendship building crazy comedy that could lift an entire crowd with a simple question: "Hey \'T\' what states aren\'t you and \'J\' allowed in now? There\'s a show in Pa. and I\'m pretty sure it\'s worse for perv\'s like you the further North and West we go, but better for ya the further South, right? Hey \'J\' who needs a ticket to the Cult/Billy Idol show? \'T\'s\' got one he can\'t use!"\nSo you can clearly see, this song is about ME! My Kreskin-like abilities of foresight, my psychic influential connection to Marty Gore, a wisdom that made Confucius say, "Dang ... Dude\'s GOOD!", and a supernatural comedic prowess that had me BEFORE the emergency number pages of Carlin\'s, Murphy\'s, and Williams\' rolodexes.\nC\'mon folks ... of course it\'s not about me. A fact or two may be unverifiable today, so I just let it be about something the entire world still needs a good bit of help with. Empathy and Love ... and all the shitty things that go along with having them absolutely, particularly their erosion and decay caused simply by time. Oppenheimer actually misquoted the text, as it is, "I am become TIME, the destroyer of all worlds." Therein lies the answer ... hop in the time machine of your mind, and roll your "sight" back to when you were 15, with the wisdom and experiences you have now, and your new-old self will merge with your old-new self as you metamorphose into the narrator, the youth, and the wisdom, at which time, the reason for the songs existence becomes moot, or the most crucial message you could ever learn, dependent upon whether you\'re "Cool" or a "Dick" and your flexibility and humility to find an equilibrium for yourself AND every single person you can still muster the love and empathy to truly care for around you. The youth see\'s the simplicity and scalability of that fact, the wise know there will always be some who just stick with being a "Dick", and the narrator just relays the facts of both, but when all are one in the same, real magic isn\'t just possible, it\'s probable. For all ye experiencing existential questions, THAT should give something to chew on for a good bit. For those rare souls that broke free of their chrysalis already, it becomes easy to see the necessity and wonder of the ART here, because without it, the eARTh would just be \'eh". For the truly elite members of the tribe, we just recognize that sometimes ya just gotta blow an hour fuckin\' off and saying something that\'s important to YOU that no one will probably ever hear, even if they listen, so instead of saying crap you don\'t care about that no one will hear, the former is clearly a "further from insane" choice for you, and the 15 yr old eyes see the value of being ornery and Hill-Larry-E-oh\'s, hence ALL☝️that☝️. \nLastly however, If you\'re the leader of the elite tribesmen, you\'ve met that metamorphosis with open arms time and time again, so ya just know this song is really about "T" and "J" and the decades of my personal pleasure that will STILL crack up an entire club full of people at the mere mention of "Skateland" in certain places along the Eastern Seaboard. There you have it; "T" the old, "J" the young, and myself using Love, Empathy, Time Travel, Psychic Influencing, Art, Comedy, and about an hour of "I Talk-It Types" tech to tell you now what I knew then ... which I couldn\'t have known then if I didn\'t know what I know now, and so on, etc. etc. This song is about ME, just like for you, it\'s about YOU. That, my dear friends, IS the real beauty AND mystery of ART ... 4.2 million MFTM albums sold to date, according to shitty data anyway, and that means there is at LEAST 4.2M meanings to this song. I\'ve never once in my travels and life on this planet heard an artist say, "NO! That\'s not what you see, THIS is what it is you should see!" If Andy, Marty, or Dave ever see this, not only will they all agree this is THEE single Dopest thing they\'ve ever read about themselves (except maybe Marty ... he may need a little therapy, but he\'ll eventually see it as growth) BUT they\'ll also say I\'m 100% correct, and the most important interpretation of the ART is the one YOU have! \n\n\n\n... and whatever sells the most albums ¯\(ツ)/¯ Wu Tang should have never written C.R.E.A.M.\n\nMuch love!!! ✌\n ϻя.ƹ\n\nPostscript - If you\'re reading this postscript, YOU are my fuckin\' Hero. If you dig the juxtaposed symbiosis of frivolity and importance of it, then like myself, you ARE the G.O.A.T. and I fuckin\' LOVE you! Take it light Homies! ✌

There are 3 people involved in this lyric: the narrator, you (little 15) and HER. The narrator has no special role. You (little 15) is seen as a contrast to HER as regards being happy, unconscious, smiling, not part of an evil world, of its intrigues. We have no real clue whether this little 15 is a boy or a girl. For sure the third party, HER, is a woman, older than 15, who has had experience in life, knows the evil of the world etc, and now she needs to see the world through the little 15's eyes, smile again as only an unspoiled soul of a 15 year old person can still do. The video shows time mercilessly going by (alarm clock hands turned fast - piece of paper with a "14" years of age thrown into the bin and soon they become "15", and in their turn they are thrown into the sewers). It seems adults' awareness of the evil in the world could be healed, relieved for a while through a contact with the simplicity and naivety of a teenager, which in his/her turn will understand, once he/she's seen, as time goes by.
The lyrics make sense if "you" is a 15 year old boy and "she" is an adult woman, and the narrator is someone who is trying to talk sense into the 15 year old boy, as the adult woman show no sign of remorse or willingness to call it off.
The boy Little 15, and the woman are in a sexual relationship and the narrator thinks the woman is wrongfully taking advantage of the boy. The 15 yr old thinks he wants the relationship, but the narrator thinks (correctly) that the 15 yr old isn't old or mature enough to know what's good for him and what isn't.
"Why take the smooth with the rough When things run smooth It's already more than enough" the narrator is responding to the 15 year old's rationalization of the relationship. The relationship makes the 15 yr old sad, but the 15 year old thinks that it's worth it due to redeeming factors in the relationship. the narrator points out that there are no redeeming factors, the relationship is inherently bad for the 15 yr old.
"She knows your mind Is not yet in league With the rest of the world And its little intrigues"
the narrator is pointing out that Little 15 is too young to be a match for the older woman, it cannot be an equal relationship. the older woman knows this and does not care.
"Why does she have to defend Her feelings inside Why pretend She's not had a life A life of near misses Now all that she wants Is three little wishes"
the narrator is pointing out that Little 15 is wrong to defend the woman's intentions. The narrator dismisses the 15 yr old's attempt to rationalize the relationship: Little 15 claims that she has not experienced a relationship, which Little 15 can provide her. Narrator says this is bunk--she's had her chances in life. She shouldn't now be looking to a 15yr old for what she craves.
"She wants to see with your eyes She wants to smile with your smile She wants a nice surprise Every once in a while"
the narrator is saying to the 15 yr old that the woman is only using him, and his youth, to feel like she's experiencing her lost youth.
This song is about innocence. The older woman who has seen the world and lived her life and now feels jaded and worn out wants just to relive her youth, she wants what he (little 15) sees and feels with his whole life ahead of him, the feeling of not knowing what will happen next of expectancy. She wants to be young and innocent again. Such a sad song but so beautiful
This song seems to be about a relationship (friendship or otherwise) 15 year old boy and girl/woman. "As time goes by And when you've seen what she's seen... you will", makes me think that this is either an older woman or a girl who has had to grown up faster and wiser beyond her years. This song is a bit sad as the boy is in love with this woman, but she doesn't seem to reciprocate his feelings back. Also, the lyrics: "She wants to see with your eyes She wants to smile with your smile" make me think that this older woman (or girl that is old beyond her years) wants to feel the innocence that this 15 year old boy has. That's all that she is wishing for; to see with his eyes, to smile with his smile. He wants to make her feel better, but he doesn't quite understand her predicament with the situation, and how to feel exactly, since the boy is younger (or at least, more immature).
You all have it backwards. Depeche Mode wrote this song to a girl who commited suicide. The only thing she lived for was Depeche Mode. She was a big fan of Depeche. Her mother wrote a letter to Depeche Mode and told them that they were the only thing she lived for and then Martin wrote a song about her.

I think is just about a drug, lol. It is an amazing song from the dark side, like they always does, sublime, dark but truthful, from the darkest to the most pure, with eyes closed. I feel really connected to this song, "little 15" doesn\'t really have to determinate an age, little 15 for me it\'s just the innocence, the innocence that the other women had before being deeply hurted, now she see the world darker, is a dark innocence, but she for sure will reborn and be clean again. It has many context, many feelings, that\'s why is amazing, it\'s objective is to everyone to feel it in their way, as intense and truthful as we can
I don't really agree with the idea that the little 15 impersonates a teenage boy purely because DM uses the collocation "little girl", "little fifteen", like a litarary motif, which apears in many songs like Enjoy the silence ("Can't you undersand, oh my little girl"), Precious ("Precious and fragile things need special handling"), A question of time ("Now you're only fifteen and you look good"), Behind the wheel ("My little girl, drive anywhere") etc.. The way I see it, this is a story about a daughter and her mother. The woman is just a victim of an unfortunate marriage, corrupted by her husband and by the society, which, in this kind of situation usually makes things worse, presuming that once a family is bound, it should never fall apart, no matter how distructible it is for each part involved. This woman is totally demoralised by the things she went through in this bad relationship(" what she's seen/She's not had a life"). The clock in the video could symbolize the hours spent in constantly fightings, her waiting for him to come home, or waiting for him to calm down and go to sleep. She may have lost her touch with reality, but her only light remains her daughter("And in your smile/She could escape there/Just for a while "), too young to realize what's going on, too pure to be affected("She knows your mind/Is not yet in league/With the rest of the world/And its little intrigues"). She is also aware of the fact that she decaded as a human being, she admires her little fifteen for remaining innocent and wants to protect that innocence. Unconsciously, the woman could envy the teenager for not having to deal with everything and she definitely wishes to be in her skin ("She wants to see with your eyes/She wants to smile with your smile"). The little girl may not understand why is her mother punished, but, as a pure and innocent child, she wishes to save her ("And if you could drive/You could drive her away"). Obviously, her father's character has an impact on her too, and her only chance to protect herself is to be obedient, and she can manage this as long as she has the freedom to dream of better days ("To a happier day/That exists in your mind/And in your smile"). As for the narrator, his main purpose is to comfort the little girl, letting her know that she's not guilty of anything and praising her for showing such strenght at such a small age. But again, this is just my interpretation.
This song makes me think of being 15 again and looking back at myself from my age now....
~She wants to see with your eyes She wants to smile with your smile She wants a nice surprise Every once in a while~
To me this is a song about a woman looking at the life of a 15 year old (her child?) and wishing she could be young and innocent again. The woman feels she has seen too much of the world and wishes she could escape into naivety.
actually i was told by a pretty die-hard dm fan that little 15 is actually a story associated with one of the members of the band. i'm pretty sure fletch's nephew is little 15. the person singing the song is actually adressing little 15 at the beginning of each verse and when the singer says 'you' he's referring to the 15-year old kid and not himself. the girl in the song is the older woman little 15 is in love with, but can't do anything, cuz he's just a 15-year old kid.
