Vox Lyrics
In the desert of my dreams I saw you there And I'm walking towards the water steaming body cold and bare
But your words cut loose the fire and you left my soul to bleed
And the pain that's in your truth's deceiving me, has got me scared
Oh why?
Through your eyes the strains of battle like a brooding storm
Your up and down these pristine velvet walls like focus never forms
My walls are getting wider and my eyes are drawn astray
I see you now a vague deception of a dying day
Oh why?
I fall into the water and once more I turn to you
and the crowds were standing staring faceless cutting off my view to you
They start to limply flail their bodies in a twisted mime
And I'm lost inside this tangled web in which I'm lain entwined
You're gone and I'm lost inside this tangled web in which I'm lain entwined
Oh why?
Oh why?

im surprised nobodys commented on this song yet... this is one of my favorites by her. not sure what exactly it means but its all good...
The extended version of this song is great. A young Sarah McLachlan hinting at us what's in store for us.
I just wish her music was a bit dakrer, especially the album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.
To me it's about a woman who has fallen for a man who doesn't care about her and treats her bad. She can't get away from him in her thoughts and her life and the other poeple in her life who care about her get in the way because they are trying to help. Then it dawns on me that this song might not even be about a romantic relationship with another person. It could also be about a battle with drug use or some other sort of negative behavior that causes problems in people's lives.
This song for me, is about a dream. A woman is dreaming of the man she desires in her waking life. "In the desert of my dreams I saw you there" says it. "And I'm walking towards the water's steaming body, cold and bare" probably tells us that in her dream, theres a body of water. "But your words cut loose the fire and you left my soul to bleed and the pain thats in your truths deceiving me has got me scared", says that in her dream, the man turned her away/didnt see her/ignored her/etc, basically that she didnt manage to reach out to him and it hurt her.
"Through your eyes the strains of battle like a brooding storm" refers to her description of him somewhat. "Youre up and down these pristine velvet walls like focus never forms" is simply that she sees him everywhere in her dream but cannot seem to get to him. "I see you now, a vague deception of a dying day" = he's in her sight now clearly.
Once again, just as the last lines say, she loses focus of him , theres people around in her dream and she cannot see him no more.
"You;re gone and I;m lost inside this tangled web in which I've lain entwined" The dream's over and shes lying in her bed.
Wow-Hellenic-that was a great analysis! I love this song too! I always wondered why the song was call "Vox"-the Latin word for "voice". Too me it seems that she needs to speak up and tell this man she loves him! But-she gets lost is the "webs"-i.e self doubt-telling herself to be silent and don't rock the boat. She just wishes to find the right why to tell him!
the narrator has fallen infatuation with another "person" that is struggling with people's perception of them being together. they are intimate (velvet walls), but yet the narrator is abandoned due to the other person's internal battles with acceptance.. the narrator is left in pain and confusion. all that's left is longing and lingering desires to be reunited.
