Back Door Man Lyrics
You open your eyes, look around
You feel the earth it wanders
Out, from under your feet - the ground
Is not firm but soft and weak - like skin
Under the touch, cannot stop to falter
Now, the damage is done the certainties gone
The spirits altered
CHORUS
And now the angry morning
Gives the early signs of warning
You must face alone the plans you make
Decisions they will try to break
Our hands are tied on the table
Maybe you can try at the back door man
While the helpless line up on the doorsteps
'Cause it's all they can do to try to get through
All of your life you've lived in a world as pure
As Eden's sixth day - now all you've been allowed
Is taken away - they will not let you be so proud
And you have felt the fear growing inside
Protest follows far and wide - they'll see how long
It will take 'till you fall - from so much denied
Your soul - it aches relentless from the fear
That they will never guess - so unfair that
They can make you feel so small
And the fear you know is real.
CHORUS
You feel the earth it wanders
Out, from under your feet - the ground
Is not firm but soft and weak - like skin
Under the touch, cannot stop to falter
Now, the damage is done the certainties gone
The spirits altered
Gives the early signs of warning
You must face alone the plans you make
Decisions they will try to break
Our hands are tied on the table

this is my favourite song on Solace
"The damage is done, the certainties gone The spirits altered.."
I'm always torn on this song, with deciding if she's singing about social or political upheaval, or about personal upheaval. Maybe it's even both.
cay15, that's my favorite part of the song. :) It makes me think of how I felt when my b/f wanted to take a break. He soon apollogised, saying he took it all back and he loved me, but those words still ring in my head.
I agree with leahclaire, it's hard to interpret this song... I think the social and/or personal upheaval is a great way to put it. I've listened to this song countless times and try to think of different ways to interpret it. Out of all her songs, I understand this song the least overall. I'm probably waaay off but it makes me think of when giant companies collapse and all of a sudden all the employees and investors are forced into financially difficult times. For example "the damage is done, the certainties gone" meaning that the company is finished and all the financial "certainty" that the employees, etc, had are now gone. If anyone has any other interpretations I'd be really enthused to read them :)
I always thought it was describing an unwanted pregnancy. I get that partly from the first verse - ground soft and weak, like skin, under the touch. And partly from the second verse - angry morning gives the early signs of warning. I don't know if this is the best interpretation though.

I was at a Sarah concert in Prince George Canada and I actually had an amazing opportunity to sit on stage with Sarah and ask her a question. I asked her about this songs meaning. She said it is about abortion and the fight for women to choose legal abortion.
