Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Lyrics
All the fear has left me now
I'm not frightened anymore
It's my heart that pounds beneath my flesh
it's my mouth that pushes out this breath
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Companion to our demons
they will dance, and we will play
With chairs, candles, and cloth
making darkness in the day
It will be easy to look in or out
upstream or down without a thought
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Peace in the struggle
to find peace
comfort on the way
to comfort
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
I won't fear love.
I'm not frightened anymore
It's my heart that pounds beneath my flesh
it's my mouth that pushes out this breath
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Companion to our demons
they will dance, and we will play
With chairs, candles, and cloth
making darkness in the day
It will be easy to look in or out
upstream or down without a thought
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Peace in the struggle
to find peace
comfort on the way
to comfort
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
I won't fear love.

Placing this song right after "Fear" to close the album was -- I have to hand it to Sarah -- one of the most beautiful feats ever performed by a singer-songwriter. You just do not see that every day.
I agree with the people who have said that this song is about giving in to your lover and not being afraid. It's just about reaching the step where you are able to surpass the fear. Give in to desire and temptation and reach that fulfillment, without guilt. I also agree that having sex to this song with someone that you are absolutly in love with would be beautiful and relaxing. Intoxicate yourself with love, don't be afraid.
This is like listening to a story unraveling. Following the song 'Fear' on the album, 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy' starts with "all the fear has left me now...". Even the gut wrenching mood of Fear is uptight whereas Fumbling is so much more relaxed. Both beautiful songs. She lets go of fear in Fumbling.
This song is great: a poets wonderland. The first four stanzas which includes "my mouth, my heart" means that love is after all a personal experience occurring for the modt part inside of us so there is nothing to fear. The second four stanzas refer to not containing tears and rage. These emotions gives 3D to the experience of loving. "Companions to our demons"- fear itself is just one more demon that lurks throughout our daily lives. But this one makes darness out of the day. (day or sunlight being a methaphor for happiness) And happiness should be the result of love. Also creativity is an end product of love (we will play with chairs, candles and cloth). Once unincumbered by fear, it would be easy to look to the future or past (upstream or down) without regret. And lastly, since love is an ongoing journey or struggle, peace and comfort escort us along the way.
I think this song brilliantly and beautifully describes the feeling of very unexpectedly becoming comfortable in your own skin, and accepting yourself for who you are, and damn the world.
"Peace in the struggle to find peace/Comfort on the way to comfort."
I'm gay, and this song really helped me come to terms with who I am and realize I deserve love too.
Gut wrenching, heart stopping, breathe taking, and love isn't always a friend or lover. Love is life, and how fear of being who and how we are has stopped kilted altered how we live our lives. Great fear of judgement from friends family society that when we get to the point of rebelling the norms, to love life and ourselves for who we are as unique individuals it's better than anything in this existence as human beings. Embracing our while selves demons and Angels, anger and happiness, joy and sadness. She's enchanting, haven't listened to her in years. Today though she's in my realm reality while I examine my new found peace. Love it. I love it.
Those who fear love, know not what to fear, for love will hurt you and bring you to tears, but it will make you grow and your soul will smile forever. This song is about letting go of your fear of getting hurt in love....love might hurt...but it rejoices the human spirit!
... but what does the second stanza mean? "companion to our demons... chair, candle, and cloth.."?
Third Stanza - "Peace in the struggle to find peace" I think this line and the next refer to it being OK to be permiscuous. Sure, it might not be true love, but it might develop inot that, and if nothing else, it will remind you of what you are searching/fumbling towards.
Yeah, I'm kinda curius about the sentences with the hold 'demons' thing.. But I guess it's about getting rid of all the 'bad things' or 'bad thoughts' you might once have had.. Just, you know.. Learning how to be your own self..
at first i really dont give much favor to this song coz i like the song fear more but after a while, the line "i wont fear love" kept on playing inside me. after playing the song over and over did i finally accepted that yup- im ready for love.
to me, the demons in a way represented what i felt on the song "fear". the fear of not giving anything in return, the fear of unfamiliarity. after i "danced" with my demons did i understand what the song is all about.
i think that the playing with the demons is about the idea that, yes you now wont fear love but you would also entertain the demons in your head in the process. maybe it is in admitiing and accepting that there are demons (fears, insecurities, hangups, etc) inside you that you get to be in the road to love. i mean you just can't wake up one day saying "i dont fear love anymore." it is in accepting and dealing that there are demons in you that you would, well, fumble towards ecstasy.
just my opinion :)
