Something Changed Lyrics

I wrote the song two hours before we met
I didn't know your name or what you looked like yet
Oh I could have stayed at home and gone to bed
I could have gone to see a film instead
You might have changed your mind and seen your friends
Life could have been very different but then
Something changed
Do you believe that there's someone up above?
Does he have a timetable directing acts of love?
Why did I write this song on that one day?
Why did you touch my hand and softly say,
"Stop asking questions that don't matter anyway.
Just give us a kiss to celebrate here today."
Something changed
When we woke up that morning we had no way of knowing
That in a matter of hours
We'd change the way we were going
Where would I be now if we'd never met?
Would I be singing this song to someone else instead?
I dunno but like you said,
"Something changed"

I love this song, the meaning is pretty self explanatory - what if he'd never gone on this blind date and stood her up?

And on roger wilco's comment about the first line being contradictory, I thought about it, and I think that he's singing about another song that he wrote and he's showing the woman the song he wrote. That's just my thought though

The one who asked about the first line, Jarvis always got a tune in his head and wrote the music before the words. For this song, the tune came into his head and then he met this person and he suddenly knew what the song had to be about. I love this song.♥

this choon contradicts itself in the first line. how could he have written a song about a person or situation he had yet to encounter? plus it is all written in past tense!

a beautiful song, tho. a true gem.

A truly beautiful song, and a cute commentary on what could have been.

I love the first line of this song. It's pretty self-explanatory, and unlike a lot of Pulp songs, it's a straight up-and-down ode to love, which is either disappointing next to the rest of the band's work, or a refreshing change, depending on your mood.

I always thought it was "I wrote this song to us before we met" not two hours

Yeah, this song is saying 'What if we'd never met on that day, would we have met another time or not?' and how things would never be the way they are now. Really sweet song, which is a bit different for Pulp!

I take the "I wrote this song two hours before we met..." literally. The song isn't so much about wondering what would've happened if you never met someone but wanting to meet someone when you don't have anyone. The narrator is predicting that in two hours he will meet this wonderful person and it will change his life. It's incredibly optimistic as well as bittersweet. What happens in two hours if there isn't anyone special? I find this song very sweet and heartbreaking at the same time.
