New York's Not My Home Lyrics

Well things were spinnin' round me
And all my thoughts were cloudy
And I had begun to doubt all the things that were me
Been in so many places
You know I've run so many races
And looked into the empty faces of the people of the night
And something is just not right, 'cause I know

That I gotta get out of here
I'm so alone
Don't you know that I gotta get out of here
'Cause New York's not my home

Though all the streets are crowded
There's somethin' strange about it
I Lived there bout a year and I never once felt at home
I thought I'd make the big time
I learned a lot of lessons awful quick
And now I'm tellin' you
That they were not the nice kind
And it's been so long since I have felt fine, that's the reason

That I gotta get out of here
I'm so alone
Don't you know that I gotta get out of here
'Cause New York's not my home

I don't think it's so much the big city as it is being out of your element. And, when you're in a place that just doesn't fit you, you do begin to doubt all the things which make you you. It's such a downer, but this song always makes me feel better if I'm down. Especially if I feel out of place in recent days, I can listen to this and relate to it. Especially since this song, more than anything (at least for me), seems to be about not being able to relate to your surroundings ("empty faces"). So, when I feel like I can't relate to those around me, this song is a real uplift, since I can still relate to Jim.

Good song. I love the first few lines:

"Well things were spinnin' round me And all my thoughts were cloudy And I had begun to doubt all the things that were me" ... I wonder how he could share these words so passionately; he sounds like he really meant them, but it's hard to talk about something that personal...

Anyways just a great song.

This song is so true. Everyone says they want to live in the big city, but no one seems to be happy there. Esp. NYC.
