Well it happened years ago,
when you lived on Stanhope Road.
We listened to your sister,
when she came home from school,
cos she was two years older,
and she had boys in her room.
We listened outside and heard her.
Alright.
Well that was alright for a while,
but soon I wanted more.
I want to see as well as hear,
and so I hid inside her wardrobe.
And she came round four,
and she was with some kid called David,
from the garage up the road.
I listened outside I heard her.
Alright.
Oh I want to take you home.
I want to give you children.
You might be my girlfriend, yeah.
When I saw you next day,
I really couldn't tell,
cos you might go and tell your mother.
And so you went with Neve,
and Neve was coming on,
and I thought I heard you laughing,
when his Mum and Dad were gone.
I listened outside, I heard you.
Alright.
Oh, I want to take you home.
I want to give you children.
You might be my girlfriend, yeah.
Well I guess it couldn't last too long.
I came home one day,
and all her things were gone,
I fell asleep inside.
I never heard her come.
And then she opened up her wardrobe,
and I had to get it on.
Oh, listen
we were on the bed when you came home,
I heard you stop outside the door.
I know you won't believe it's true,
I only went with her 'cos she looks like you.
Oh, I want to take you home.
I want to give you children.
You might be my girlfriend, yeah.

The surface story is : He fancies the younger girl. The sister is older and is getting it on, so they listen. He spies on the sister and then ends up in the cupboard spying on her. He then ends up avoiding the younger girl. Younger Girl in typical manner goes off with some other chap called Neve and sleeps with him. He then runs off, and spys more on the sister again. At some later date, the sister finds him in the cupboard and they end up sleeping together. He then confesses to her about sleeping with the sister yet wanting to be with her. She probably hates him, but it's all her fault so...
xdvr summed it up....
He sleeps with the older sister as some sort of revenge, as he's bitter he cannot be with the younger sister he really cares for (as she's dating & sleeping with some other guy). The younger sister is the one he really wants for a gf, to have babies with & all that romantic future fantasizing you do when infatuated with someone.
Of course, the older sister resembles the younger one, which also plays into his hooking up with her. She's the next best thing, & he's a horny, curious teenage boy who takes the surprise opportunity. He sings the whole song as some sort of confession to the younger sister, suggesting he still cares & hopes for some chance with her.
The voyeuristic aspect of this song & many Pulp songs is, well, interesting to say the least :D. I also notice reoccurring themes of bitterness over a woman choosing another guy over the song's narrator.
the difference between love and sex.
the only thing that confuses me - does it actually say neve in the song? I thought that was a girl's name - at least 'niamh' is?
The story:
The protagonist (dude) is confessing to his friend something that happens years ago when they were younger and lived on the same road.
I guess they spent some time at her home, idk, playing or chatting or smtg after school since they were neighbours, and they used to see her friend's sister get home from school, and since she was 2 years older she was more "mature" and had more experience on relationships and stuff, so she often brought boys into their house to make out and... you know xD
The protagonist and his friend listens she moaning and saying dirty things mid-sex and all the noise from it's bedroom. The protagonist had probably a platonic 1-sided hidden love with his friend, but being a horny teenager he started wanting more than just hearing his friend's sister having sex, so he started hidding inside her wardrobe to see her having sex with the boys she brought home.
The first time the protagonist did it he noticed she came back home around 4:00 pm, He was inside her friend's wardrobe and noticed she was having sex with a boy called David from a garage up the street.
(Then there's the chorus, I'll detail it later)
The next day after he hid in his friend's sister wardrobe, he probably thought about it but didn't told his friend because she would probably tell her mom about it and they might get in trouble (her sister and the protagonist for it's creepy behaviour). He hid again in her sister's wardrobe but this time he heard his friend (which he had a crush on) waiting for a boy called Neve that she probably liked and invited home and started laughing when he arrived home and told her his parents weren't home. Probably unfolding into sex with this Neve.
(Chorus again)
He realizes the (now) habit of hiding in his friend's sister wardrobe couldn't last for long and soon he'd probably get busted. Even though, he still hides again in her wardrobe. He notices her things (probably clothes, panties, stuff) aren't there like usual and since he never heard she comming, he decides to take a nap inside the wardrobe while waiting her to arrive. To his surprise she arrives home and opens the wardrobe, and see the protagonist there. So they proceed to... s e x
They were mid-sex in bed when the protagonist hears his friend arriving home, but she just stops outside the door (probably listens her sister is making out with someone and don't want to bother them). The protagonist then justifies why he did this: "I just went with ther because she looks like you"...
He tells her he had a crush on her and since he "couldn't" have her, he fulfilled his fancies with her sister, just because he was a Horny teen and wouldn't miss any opportunity and because she physically resembled his younger sister, it's crush.
Now about the Chorus: It's him fantasizing about having children with his friend he likes and thiking of him as being his girlfriend and idealizing her. Maybe I have a theory: Since the first 2 times the chorus is sung, he sings just before "I listened outside, I heard her" and "I listened outside, I heard you", so maybe in the first 2 chorus who actually said "I want to take you home, I want to give you children, You might be my girlfriend" were actually the boys them both were having sex with (David saying to her sister and Neve to her younger little sister).
Doesn't it kind of seem like he's gatting with his friends older sister because in some abstract way they are similar. "I only went with her 'cos she looks like you." What a brilliantly kinky song.
have ya'll seen the video? perfection.
There are 2 videos which one do you mean? (If it's the original, I agree)
o to be in jarvis' place. great song, easily on par with common people, possibly a smidge better
it sort of seems like his making a confession to his s.o. (someone) and she seems mostly ok with it. good for her.
