its amazing how far music can come.. 24 years after it released and its one of the most heartfelt songs ive heard
Here comes Dick, he's wearing a skirt
Here comes Jane, you know she's sporting a chain
Same hair, revolution
Same build, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous
Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad
He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad
And she don't need advice that'll center her
She's happy with the way she looks
She's happy with her gender
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous
Mirror image, see no damage
See no evil at all
Kewpie dolls and urine stalls
Will be laughed at
The way you're laughed at now
Now, something meets boy, and something meets girl
They both look the same
They're overjoyed in this world
Same hair, revolution
Unisex, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants
Tomorrow Janie's wearing a dress
Future outcasts and they don't last
And, today, the people dress the way that they please
The way they tried to do in the last centuries
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than we know, love each other so
Androgynous
Here comes Jane, you know she's sporting a chain
Same hair, revolution
Same build, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous
Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad
He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad
And she don't need advice that'll center her
She's happy with the way she looks
She's happy with her gender
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous
Mirror image, see no damage
See no evil at all
Kewpie dolls and urine stalls

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Nothing fun or funny about confusion..and now that the world Paul sings about is here..theres still nothing funny or cute about confusion..good song..but sorry..a world full of drag queens and freaks exposed to children and calling it normal is just plain wrong
@otto88 How old are you? You weren\'t around in the 80s, were you? If you were, you sold your soul and became, in the immortal words of Dead Kennedys, a chicken$#!+ conformist like your parents. \r\n\r\n\r\nDifficult to reconcile blunt homophobia and transphobia with being a "Mats fan in my experience. Kids like you in the 80s were into bad hair metal, not the Replacements and Hüsker Dü. You DO realize that this music is by and for people who seek to overturn the status quo, right? \r\n\r\n\r\n60+% of high school kids identify as gender-fluid now. Get over yourself. That culture war has been dead and buried for a long time, regardless of the pathetic efforts of various Nazi jackwad Republicans to revive it. \r\n\r\n\r\nEver wondered why real, lifelong dedicated punks like me were so flamboyant and sexually uninhibited and cooler than you in the 80s? And often still are? \r\n\r\n\r\nIt\'s because we LOVE triggering uptight white suburban wannabes and exposing them for the poseurs they are. The Replacements broke up in 1991, yet they\'ve triggered your phobias and exposed your true face from beyond the grave! I find that HILARIOUS. The raison d\'etre, the very soul, of punk rock.\r\n\r\n\r\nGeneration X. Still pissing off cultural conservatives after all these years. My heart swells with pride!
