it seems like she's searching for her mothers approval in her choice of men, but her mother won't say anything b/c she wants liz to be happy on her own account.
I think her mother won't say anything because she knows the women in question has been down that road many times and each time it ended the same way. Probably at some point mom made the prediction that the relationship would end and of course it did. These predictions of doom and the fulfillment of them probably caused great bitterness so mom now just keeps her mouth shut and wishes the girl all the best.
