Skyway Lyrics
You take the skyway, high above the busy little one-way
In my stupid hat and gloves, at night I lie awake
Wonderin' if I'll sleep
Wonderin' if we'll meet out in the street
To take the skyway
It don't move at all like a subway
It's got bums when it's cold like any other place
It's warm up inside
Sittin' down and waitin' for a ride
Beneath the skyway
Oh, then one day, I saw you walkin' down that little one-way
Where, the place I'd catch my ride most everyday
There wasn't a damn thing I could do or say
Up in the skyway
In my stupid hat and gloves, at night I lie awake
Wonderin' if I'll sleep
Wonderin' if we'll meet out in the street
To take the skyway
It's got bums when it's cold like any other place
It's warm up inside
Sittin' down and waitin' for a ride
Beneath the skyway
Where, the place I'd catch my ride most everyday
There wasn't a damn thing I could do or say
Up in the skyway

To me it's about a guy who takes the bus every day and eyes a girls he wants to meet who takes the skyway every day. He finally gets the courage to meet her but when he takes the skyway, he looks down and sees her taking the bus. A love not meant to be. Prabably my top five songs of all time.
Skyways are elevated walkways between stores and buildings in downtown Minneapolis where Westerberg grew up.
As a kid he would get kicked out of the skyway and have to be outside in the cold watching others walking around in the warmth.
Romance in transit, much like "Kiss Me On The Bus". Besides, hanging above the city and watching all the people below walking around doing their business, walking from points A to B, while your breath fogs up the window as you think of that one person you wish you had the courage to get to know is kind of romantic in a way. It's a beautiful song.
I think it's about irony really. What we call sod's law in England. Like what Joefeenus said, the one time he takes the skyway, she takes the bus. Although I think the song's story can be interpreted as a metaphor for those many times when a love just wasn't meant to be for whatever reason such as bad timing.
This sounds to me like he wrote a song about the place where he met his wife. It is not really a special place but those happy memories make it special to him.
Not really sure what a skyway is, but I always envisioned it as a ride to all a place where all dreams are possible. Now it makes me think of the movie Waking Life.
Think the skyway is and elevated train in some city like chicago.
This song is very sweet and kind of sad. He passes the same girl every day and thinks about her, but can never say anything to her.
dunno I feel one of them's dead and ......... still in love in the afterlife!?!?? sumthing like that pretty little song tho....... lol just an opinion
This song makes me a bit sad when I listen to it. Maybe because of the music... the words are kindy ambiguous. I can't tell what he's feeling. Great song though. Love this band.
