Polka Dot Rose Lyrics

He always liked to paint with his sunglasses on
Cause acrylics tend to burn on his eyes
And nothing brought him closer to the canvas
Than the warmth of Eleanor's thighs
He never had much of a devious nature
But was hardly a modern day saint
If you asked the little boy what he'd be when he grew up
Said I'd rather be a fireman than paint

Keep on painting

She always liked to dance with no shoes on
Cause the gravel felt good on her toes
And Mr. Merriweather left his wife and his kids
In search of a polka dot rose
They never thought much of his mongrelesque stature
Or the scent that could make a buzzard faint
If you asked the little boy what he'd be when he grew up
He'd say
Keep on painting

It about when parents select fore them what the kid´s should do but they want to do other things but are forced to do it theyr way.

this song is about keeping yourself focused and not dwelling on fantasies...mr. merriweather goes in search of something that doesn't exist, and the kid wants to be a fireman (an exciting, honorable job) but has to keep painting (a drab, boring, and repetitive job)

It seems to me like they're telling the kid to forget the idea of being a fireman and keep painting. It's like they know what it means to be a fireman, the kid certainly doesn't, and are telling him that it would be better to paint.

To me, it's a metaphor for plugging away at what you're good at it, even if it's not your first choice.

it's about the fact that art is all you're good at and it's all you'll ever be able to do, everyone outside an artist's world thinks "oh I wish I could do what he does" when in reality an artists' mind is plagued with madness, and they'd rather do anything else than repeat this hell of a cycle over and over
