Can't Lose You Lyrics
So you're gone but i know you're not so far away
You're a call on the phone or a ride on a plane
But that just isn't the same, yeah well
That's ok because i was never home anyway
So now everyone's evolving and i am just the same
As i was ten years ago, but i don't know
Maybe the simple life is more the way to go
But then again, i'm mostly all alone
'Cause I'm losing everyone
But i know i can't lose you
And maybe my time will come
But i know i can't lose you
The older i get well the more that life is making sense
And it's similar to traffic of being president
'Cause i'm not the one in control
You grab a hold
I'm just a hammer helping to nail the future down
But it's getting hard making my friends leave town
But maybe i missed the nose right on my face
For what's just past it
And maybe i have the gift that everyone speaks to highly of
Funny how nobody wants it
You're a call on the phone or a ride on a plane
But that just isn't the same, yeah well
That's ok because i was never home anyway
So now everyone's evolving and i am just the same
As i was ten years ago, but i don't know
Maybe the simple life is more the way to go
But then again, i'm mostly all alone
But i know i can't lose you
And maybe my time will come
But i know i can't lose you
And it's similar to traffic of being president
'Cause i'm not the one in control
You grab a hold
I'm just a hammer helping to nail the future down
But it's getting hard making my friends leave town
For what's just past it
And maybe i have the gift that everyone speaks to highly of
Funny how nobody wants it

This song reminds me of my college years. I was in my hometown, working and going to school, and one by one, my friends were moving away... and I could really identify with what he was saying here,
"So now everyone's evolving and i am just the same As i was ten years ago, but i don't know Maybe the simple life is more the way to go But then again, i'm mostly all alone"
It was a lonely time, but this song was a comfort to me.
What does it mean? I guess it's subjective, but I feel like it's Derek speaking to different people - ranging from friends and maybe his future wife - and then back to God in the chorus? That's how I take it at least, when he says, "I'm losing everyone but I know I can't lose you."
I love how he compares life, saying, "it's similar to traffic or being president, 'cause I'm not the one in control" - I think he's talking about what he's calling his "gift" in this song. I'm not sure, but I believe Derek has a gift of prophecy, and so I think he's saying, everyone speaks so highly of this gift, but nobody wants it - and I have it and I'm trying to let God be in control, but it stinks because it can lead to loneliness...
Now, the lyric that stands out the most to me in this song is one that Derek uses a LOT in his earlier songs, in some regard. Here he says, "Maybe I missed the nose right on my face for what's just past it." This one I don't get yet... but I'd love to hear him explain it some time.
