Glenn Danzig was a bit of a poet when it came to his early lyrics. He likes to paint a picture with his words rather than tell a story. He sets a mood, or attempts to put you in the shoes of a character. Cough/Cool is about a town terrorized by a vampire told from the perspective of the vampire.

I general feel of Pandemonium on the street (society).
The year it was written might give some insight into it's message. Which is unknown to me.
Creepy as hell. Makes for sick horror punk. It also somehow reminds me of the Munsters theme song...anyway, very cryptic meaning, but still fantastic.
to scruffy: I think this song was written in '77
I guess, it's about a gang beatin up a guy, til he spits/coughs blood. that cough('s) cool. Seems theyre a bunch of outlaws, hangin out in a "corner full of piss and fear", who are very bad company, and if you walk by without covering your face, you're gonna get it. Some kind of staredown - situation, I think.
Love this band, Danzig was (!) a pretty good songwriter.
