The Puppet Lyrics
i'll practise my fall
for practice makes perfect
chained to the wall
for maximum hold
the windows too far
too far from my legs
open the door
and let out the cold
you knew about this
with your head in your hands
all along
i was the puppet
trampolines broken
ceiling has come down
the ache in my back
tells me something's gone wrong
rocking horse rocks
as the wallpaper peels
curtain would like to know
what he has done
you knew about this
with your head in your hands
all along
i was the puppet
we're the salt of the earth
and we know what to say
we're the salt of the earth
and we know our place
you knew about this
with your head in your hands
all along
i was the puppet
for practice makes perfect
chained to the wall
for maximum hold
the windows too far
too far from my legs
open the door
and let out the cold
with your head in your hands
all along
i was the puppet
ceiling has come down
the ache in my back
tells me something's gone wrong
rocking horse rocks
as the wallpaper peels
curtain would like to know
what he has done
with your head in your hands
all along
i was the puppet
and we know what to say
we're the salt of the earth
and we know our place
with your head in your hands
all along
i was the puppet

What I love about this song is that the chorus is so catchy and bouncy that you find yourself singing along happily: "I was the puppet!" Then after a couple of seconds you kind of realize what a dark song this is. I think the contrast of the tone and the mood of the words gives the whole songs a sarcastic feel.
As for the meaning, it's obviously about feeling controlled. The bit about "the salt of the earth" makes me think he's referring to being controlled be God because I'm pretty sure that's an allusion to something in the bible. (haha I should pay more attention in sunday school) Anywho, I think this song is about not wanting God controlling your life and wanting free will. The chorus seems to be him yelling at God for letting him think that he had free will.
Well, that's what I got out of it anyways, but I always had a tendency to be a bit off in English class...
