This song confuses me. It's like, is it about him losing a girl...? Which is likely considering the beautiful beginning and the heartfelt lyrics...but it also seems like his really weird reaction to secondhand smoke. Is the lost girl "the guest" and the smoke is why she left? Yeah, I'm still confused. He also sings "And you are acting like an idiot" and "This room's a mess, it's looking hideous" in the choruses I believe....awesome song :0)
the cigarette is a metaphor for all the little things that have led to where they are now--not together. it may not be a girl, it may just be a friend, or a memory of a better time.
anyway, that's what I THINK.
It breaks my heart everytime I hear this. His voice (Alex's) sounds like he is in so much pain when he sung this.

hahaha, when i was working in a bar and i guy started smoking, my boss put this song on at full blast... good times.
This is in my opinion the best Phantom Planet song, both the normal and live versions. It sounds like he is trying to forget a past girlfriend, but I don't know what the chorus is about. Oh well, PP is my favorite band and this is my favorite song by them.
