The phrase 'Losing in front of your home crowd' is a well-used sporting cliche in England, most commonly used in football (the David Beckham type, Americans) but also in all sports. Teams play home games and away games, and they are expected to win their home games, so losing in front of your home crowd is one of the worst feelings in sport.
I think it starts with reference to a sport (quite possibly boxing as per the title), but just goes on to describe the feeling of being a failure in the town you grew up in, I think.
It's such an incredible world-weary melody that just depresses the hell out of me, but also makes me joyous when I sing along! The man is a genius, God knows where he gets these melodic ideas from. I always just took the title 'Boxers' to be a kind of homo-erotic reference, but maybe that's just me!
This song has been stuck in my head for the last few days, and I even used it as my Facebook status the other day ("Nick is losing in front of his hometown"). I also thought they should have used this song as the credits rolled on 'Match Of The Day' (a British football programme) on the first day of the season, as so many teams did lose in front of their home crowds this weekend!
Odd -- when I listen to this song, I think of boxers as in men's underwear!! But boxers as in wrestlers makes much more sense. :: smacks herself in the forehead :: I'm a dozy mare.

I love this song...it's so fantastic...the melody is divine. I think it's just about a boxer who has lost a fight and is dealing with the consequences...and figuring out who stays with you through the losses and who leaves you. Although the title does imply an added component to it :)
Morrissey had a thing for boxing for quite a while, which is where this comes from. It's rumored he had a relationship with a young boxer too, which may be the guy in the song.
Probably my favorite Moz solo song. Seems very obvious to me that it is simply about a boxer losing a match on his homeground. That is what the video suggests anyway:

I for one think the melody is quite uplifting and not very melancholic.
