Hold On To Your Friends Lyrics
A bond of trust
Has been abused
Something of value
May be lost
Give up your job
Squander your cash - be rash
Just hold on to your friends
There are more than enough
To fight and oppose
Why waste good time
Fighting the people you like
Who will fall defending your name
Oh, don't feel so ashamed
To have friends
But now you only call me
When you're feeling depressed
When you feel happy I'm
So far from your mind
My patience is stretched
My loyalty vexed
Oh, you're losing all of your friends
Hold on to your friends
Hold on to your friends
Resist - or move on
Be mad, be rash
Smoke and explode
Sell all of your clothes
Just bear in mind :
Oh, there just might come a time
When you need some friends
Has been abused
Something of value
May be lost
Give up your job
Squander your cash - be rash
Just hold on to your friends
To fight and oppose
Why waste good time
Fighting the people you like
Who will fall defending your name
Oh, don't feel so ashamed
To have friends
When you're feeling depressed
When you feel happy I'm
So far from your mind
My patience is stretched
My loyalty vexed
Oh, you're losing all of your friends
Hold on to your friends
Resist - or move on
Be mad, be rash
Smoke and explode
Sell all of your clothes
Just bear in mind :
Oh, there just might come a time
When you need some friends

this song is about a fair-weather friend, who doesn't appreciate the friends he has, a user.
just 1 comment?! this song is brilliant!!!
This song is fantastic indeed ferdinand, and almost makes me cry each time I hear it!
It's just a lovely song about friendship ("don't feel so ashamed to have friends" - what a great line!)
The melody sounds like a plea from a man who has squandered his friends in the past and doesn't want others to make the same mistake. Almost in a similar vein to 'I Threw It All Away" by Bob Dylan, another favourite song of mine.
By the end of the song I'm always thinking of good friends I haven't seen for a while, and wanting to call them up to see how they are.
I also love singing along to the daring lines "Give up your job / Squander your cash" - I always think, well maybe he's got a point, that sounds like a good plan...!
Also, I always think he's going to sing "smoke hash" in the last verse, as it goes with the rhyme scheme, which always makes me chuckle...
Smoke hash! I hear it too... Great song!
I always expected to hear Smoke Hash as well lol.
This song mustn't have very many comments because the lyrics are so self explanatory but it is still one of the greatest Morrissey songs of all time. It is probably the best commentary on half hearted friendship ever committed to music.
It's so sad though, I always feel like a horrible friend after listening to it. As we become older we really do seem to lose touch with our friends and become increasingly focused on our jobs, relationships and money hence Morrissey's call to arms:
Give up your job Squander your cash - be rash Just hold on to your friends
The section below always draws my attention to friends I have fallen out with over stupid arguments or misunderstandings but have left it so long that the friendship cannot be rescued:
There are more than enough To fight and oppose Why waste good time Fighting the people you like Who will fall defending your name Oh, don't feel so ashamed To have friends
What a moving and touching song. Morrissey you observant and poetic mofo!
Fantastic song. I think this might be another of his songs like "Accept Yourself" is, where he is singing to himself, telling himself not to let go of his friends or push them away and in doing that is telling us not to make the mistake he may have made. just my view on it though, no one really knows but the great man himself.
Spoken from a man who has burned bridges in the past and regrets it. Take heed all you who are growing older.
I think this song is about one of Morrissey's former friends who was in a band with him.
