If You're Gone Lyrics
I think your already gone
I think I'm finally scared now
You think I'm weak, I think you are wrong
I think you are already leaving
Feels like your hand is on the door
I thought this place was an empire
Now I'm relaxed, I can't be sure
And I think you're so mean
I think we should try
I think I could need this in my life
And I think I'm scared
I think too much
I know it's wrong
It's the problem I'm feeling
If you're gone
Baby it's time to come home
There's an awful lot if breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone
Baby you need to come home
Come home
There's a little bit of something me in everything in you
I bet you're hard to get over
I bet the room just won't shine
I bet my hands I could stay here
And I bet that you need more than you mind
And I think you're so mean
I think we should try
I think I could need this in my life
I think I'm just scared
That I know too much
I can't relate, and that's a problem I'm feeling
If you're gone
Maybe it's time to come home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone
Baby you need to come home
Come home
There's a little bit of something me in everything in you
I think you're so mean
I think we should try
I think I could need this in my life
And I think I'm scared
Do I talk too much?
I know its wrong, it's a problem I'm feeling
If you're gone
Then maybe its time to come home
Well there's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone
Hell baby you need to come home
Come home
There's a little bit of something me in everything in you
Something me
(Everything in you)
Something me
In you
Rob actually said he wrote this song about when he asked his wife marisol to marry him and she wasn't sure about marrying a musician. he wrote this to tell her basically that life wouldn't be bearable without her in it.
It's about the loss of someone you care about...a (best) friend, significant other, family member...and you want to reconcile things because you're confused but you know things may take time.
Point blank..to me this song goes like this. Yes I could live without you but I don't want to. If you're checking out of this relationship don't go and give me a chance because I love you"
so sad :(

It's not about his guitar! In VH1 Storytellers, Rob himself says:
"It wasn't going to be on the record. I wrote it over the break (before Mad Season), right when I met my wife. And it was kinda this situation where she had- we had met, and it was good, it was big. It was strong. It was all gonna happen. And she all of the sudden had this revelation, that she was dating a musician, and it scared the hell out of her. She was like "I don't wanna marry a musician, that's not gonna work..." And so I wrote this song as kind of like a letter to her."
this song is all about that moment when you realize someone is going to break up with you.. i went through that recently, and thank goodness it wasn't true, but it perfectly described that scared feeling..
yeah, its about that feeling when you know you're going to be broken up with. part of you wants to do everything you can to hold on--and then you find yourself already planning and thinking about how your life would be without that person
I agree with everyone that said this song is talking about the feeling right before a break-up. Im going through this right now.. It's really hard and I'm doing everything I can to stay with her, but the feeling that you get right before the break-up is all I'm feeling right now.. This song is like the perfect song for me right now.. Matchbox 20 is amazing!
I am in love with the "I think I'm just scared - I think too much" part because we tend to overthink everything, to have preconceptions and we end up being scared and dissapointed. My best friend once told me: I think I think too much, but I realized what she wanted to say after I listened to this song.
@greengreenleaf I like this part, and always thought the "I bet you need more than you mind" was a genius lyric. Rob's really underrated for his lyrics imo

actually, rob thomas wrote this song on no terms of breaking up. when he was on tour he was nervous about being engaged and if the marraige would work out.
yeah, i think him and i are done.
