I believe this song is about being a player. He meets a girl, they develop a connection “I forget when words were only words” the girl isn’t looking into the meaning of everything he says searching for affection or deeper meaning that proves he actually cares when he doesn’t.

“In this stage we can’t get hurt” is about the beginning of a connection when it’s just fun and they’re hooking up, but soon enough the girl will develop feelings, become attached or fall in love making her vulnerable and soon hurt.

“Don’t try to understand me” because once the girl tries to understand and get to know him on a “deeper level” there’s no way she won’t develop stronger feelings if there is attraction and they are having sex.

“We’re too cool to be alone, but not to crazy to get busted” is because he doesn’t want to be alone and neither does she but she wants love and he just wants a lay and soon enough she’ll get hurt or she’ll find out about the other women and he’ll get “busted”

“I found one life just ain’t enough, I need another soul to feed on” because once he has this connection with this girl, they’re hooking up and seeing each other it won’t be enough and he needs more attention , more women to have sex with but he won’t stop seeing the first one, he’ll continue and start sleeping with multiple women while they all start developing feelings for him

“I’m the flame I can’t get burnt” he’s detached and cares the least so he’s in control. He’ll never get hurt, but she will get burnt from his flame.

“Love don’t change, don’t come around here” I feel like it means even if she falls in love with him it won’t change that he doesn’t care and he will never fall in love with her

“Don’t wear my heart on your sleeve” I think he’s saying don’t become vulnerable and develop feelings for him, or become too emotional. Don’t mistake his feelings for something more than what it is, all he wants is sex. “Like a high school letter” so don’t fall in love with him fast the way teenagers do which could be puppy love, too fast and naive

“Don’t strain cause nothin ever comes from it” Don’t try to force or talk him into committing because it won’t work or don’t have hope it will amount to something more one day. Don’t overthink the situation because it’ll never be anything more than sex.

“And the people we’ve become, well they’ve never been the people who we are” I think is about him pretending to be someone he isn’t , someone who cares just to get in her pants. Maybe she knows he won’t commit at some point but she doesn’t stop seeing him because she’s hoping one day he’ll change his mind if he likes her enough.

“ I strapped on one horse and prayed for luck I dug another hole to bleed I know exactly how this works” he put on a Trojan condom and is about to have sex with another female, starting a connection with another female while still seeing the others and this one will fall for him too and get hurt like the rest. He knows exactly how to play the girl and have her coming back. He’s good at what he does. “I need a new feel dirty” he likes the thrill and excitement of the chase and new girl to get with.

He can’t be that person and maybe he feels a little bad about it now because she now loves him and this will hurt her deeply.

Great song. This song hits deep because I’ve been this female that’s fallen in love with men like this.

quite bluntly... the "horse" is a condom (trojan) and hes hoping he doesnt get her pregnant...

"hole to bleed": him having sex with her is his release... he feels relived of his stress(sorrow,etc.) when they fuck... (hence the praing for luck with the condom)

the rest is him realizing that this release is becoming old... it no longer has the same effect on him as it once had... he needs to find something new....

These lyrics are wrong. It's "she knows the part it makes me nervous" and "I've found solace in this place"

This song is about a situationship about something that's mostly physical in nature. Don't strain don't come around here don't wear my heart on your sleeve like a high school letter...don't strain cause nothing ever comes from it and the people we become they've never been the people who we are

I think it's about people who sleep together. He's got this thing going on with this girl where there's a purely physical attraction and things tend to happen when they're together. But that's it.

I love the way Rob Thomas' voice sounds on the part but I'm not sure how these lyrics fit into the song
