Kody Lyrics

Kody sat down on the avenue
He tapped his feet, to the humming of the highway
He watched the light shine down on the broken glass and thought
I don't got no reasons, yet
There it is and there it was
It was clear to all of us
We kept this hat of broken dreams
And we pulled them out, when we needed them around

[chorus]

So please hand me the bottle, I think I'm lonely now
And please give me direction, I think the hurt set in
And I don't feel nothing

There's a squeak hinge down on the back gate
It lets us know if he comes around
I don't sleep that good anyway
If you've never heard the silence, it's a God awful sound

[chorus]

I don't feel nothing, no I don't feel nothing
There's nothing to feel good about here

Don't much get down to the avenue
I could drive, but it takes so much to get there
Don't get off on all the broken glass, the cadillac scene,
Well
I've seen a lot of good things die and I'm
In an over emotional way

[chorus]

"I don't sleep that good anyway If you've never heard that silence, it's a God awful sound" Perfect description of what it's like in the middle of the night, when the world is asleep and you're not able to sleep. You have to experience it to understand it.

I think that this guy Kody killed himself at the avenue. He was obviously a good friend, who would let himself in through the back gate. After Kody's death, Rob had trouble sleeping, lying awake listening for the gate, the silence being a painful reminder of his loss. Friends and family probably advised him to go to the avenue, to get some kind of closure but he didn't know if he could.

Don't get down much to the avenue I could drive but it takes so much to get there

It's an amazing song. My favourite line is

I've seen a lot of good things die and I'm in an over emotional way

I think everyone has felt that way before

Growing up in an abusive household I relate to a lot of the lyrics in this song. It has a definitive feeling of hoplessness which is common among abused kids. "There's a squeak hinge down on the back gate It lets us know if he comes around I don't sleep that good anyway If you've never heard the silence, it's a God awful sound" It's the anticipation of an abusive parent coming home, waiting to hear that squeak and not being able to sleep knowing it's coming. "So please hand me the bottle, I think I'm lonely now And please give me direction, I think the hurt set in I just caved in And I don't feel nothing" Being battered physically , mentally or both makes you numb. It is a defense mechanism to ward off pain. Then to feel again you turn to alchohol or other substances for that sensation of feeling. And wanting direction is wanting someone to tell you how to make it stop. "Don't much get down to the avenue I could drive, but it takes so much to get there" This is about blocking out the pain of the past. "Don't get off on all the broken glass, The Cadillac scene, well I've seen a lot of good things die and I'm In an over emotional way" This is about not wanting to confront and deal with what you've experienced because facing it feels as difficult as living through it. That's my take of the song. It has a very deep and personal meaing to me and the angst in Rob's voice just personify's that feeling.

My Interpretation

This is probably one of my favorite songs by them.

THIS IS THE GREATEST SONG BY THEM. JUST THE LYRICS SAY IT ALL.......

I think the song is about losing someone and not being able to get back to life... Examples: "Please give me the bottle, I think I'm lonely now." "Please give me direction"

And the point of the squeek hinge is that if Kody doesn't come through it, something's wrong.

I myself like how the song starts with Kody at what could be a car accident and possibly contemplating suicide, and ends with the Narrator standing in the same exact place and state of mind, demonstrating a circle.

One of my favorite songs by them.

when i first heard this song, i thought he sang "if you've never heard the silence, it's the God of all sound". thinking about it now gives me an interesting double meaning.

I love this song. It's sad and beautiful at the same time. It's my favorite on their first CD.
