Real World Lyrics

I wonder what it's like to be the rainmaker
I wonder what it's like to know that I make the rain
I'd store it in boxes with little yellow tags on everyone
And you can come see them when I'm...done, when I'm
Done
I wonder what it's like to be a super hero
I wonder where I'd go if I could fly around downtown
From some other planet, I get this funky high on yellow
Sun
Boy I bet my friends will all be...stunned, they're stunned

[chorus]
Straight up, what did you hope to learn about here
If I were someone else, would this all fall apart
Strange, where were you, when we started this gig,
I wish the real world, would just stop hassling me

I wonder what it's like to be the head honcho
I wonder what I'd do if they all did just what I said
I'd shout out an order, I think we're out of this man get
me some
Boy don't make me wanna change my...tone, my tone

[chorus]

Please don't change, please don't break
The only thing that seems to work at all is you
Please don't change, at all from me
To you, and you to me

[chorus]

To me, this song is about how every once in a while everyone days dreams about what it would be like to be someone else. They want to get away from the stress of normal life and just chill.

I think it is about a guy leading a camel through a bowling alley. No, really, I think this is a great song. "If I was someone else, would this all fall apart?" That is my favorite line. You just have to be who you are - how deep...

To me this is written from Rob's point of view, or another type of rock star. The star is just accepted that now they are famous they have to give up the real world and wish it would stop hasseling him. Then the chorus is about a female (or male pending the sex of the rock star) who wants to be with the rock star once he became a star. Hence the line "If I was someone else would this all fall apart?" meaning if I werent a star would you still be with me? Then there was "Strange where were you when we started this gig?" as in where were you before I hit it big? About everything else excluding the chorus he is pondering life not being a star. That is what it is to me. I think alot of people try and see the song in a way they can relate to and miss the meaning.

I always thought it was about someone who hit it big & has made some false friends. They wonder if I was someone else would you still want to know me. "strange where were you when we started this gig."

“I came to this realization that we were going to make a record and I was going to be in a band and that all of a sudden, I was 23, 24 years old and no matter what I did, I was never going to be a fireman. I was never going to be a policeman… and it’s like if you weren’t doing that, would everything change? Would everybody think of me the same as if I were just like working in a fast-food restaurant.”

I think Rob is feeling guilty about his status as A famous artist,

Ex- "If I were someone else, would this all fall apart?"

And how society today pressures people to want the fame and all the glory, but doesn't talk about the afflictions that come with that status.

"I wish the real world would just stop hassling me"

I'm probably wrong, but that's just my two cents!

I agree with the point about him feeling pressurised by others,or maybe his own ambitions and dreams, but perhaps by the girl involved too..if he was a rainmaker or a superhero, would she really still love him the same? And she's presented as an antithesis to this, he needs her to be strong and sure and the same, he needs her stability. Good song.

SmileyJeff is totally right. I think that's the most adequate explanation I've heard of the song. I think it may also be about (this is just a theory) a "geek" in high school and he wants to be someone else to show them how he really is and have people accep him for who he is. I don't know. SmileyJeff's explanation was the best.
