Hallo Spaceboy Lyrics

Spaceboy, you're sleepy now,
Your silhouette is so stationary
You're released but your custody calls
And I want to be free
Don't you want to be free?
Do you like girls or boys?
It's confusing these days
But Moondust will cover you
Cover you
This chaos is Killing me

Bye Bye love
This chaos is killing me

Love this song so much that I even had a tattoo done on my back with a saying "This chaos is killing me"

this is from the Bowie concept album "1. Outside". the concept doesn't make much true sense, altho it's supposed to be theme music for some futuristic mystery novel (think Bladerunner with mutants instead of Replicants).

the album was also Bowie's experiment in industrial, guided mostly by his brilliant guitarist Reeves Gabrels.

the album version of this song is decent. one of the better songs on it! the Pet Shop Boys later remixed it into a more palatable format, and the remix is by far better than the original.

what does it all mean? it's David Bowie, so who really knows? it obviously is an homage to science fiction, almost a nod to his Ziggy Stardust phase.

perhaps this is the farewell to Ziggy he never had the opportunity to express.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one in the world who apparently owns David Bowie's concept album... definitely weird, but great stuff. At times.

Perhaps it IS his official farewell to Ziggy...

I always pictured it as a song about Space Oddity with all the chaos going on as they lose contact with major tom. but it is a wierd concept because we all know major tom is a junkie not a space traveler but a farewell to ziggy sounds reasonable.

It could still be about space oditty. Ashes to ashes was not a revelation of the true identity of major Tom, the story was that he called earth again to say that he was happy in space, but that he now wanted to come down to earth, but ground control came to the conclusion he was a junkie. I think this is after ashes to ashes, they abandoned him to die.

rot: you are attacking a fellow poster. the objective of this forum is to give our interpretation and thoughts on particular songs. i agree with you that the original stands fine on its own. but "fuck you wilco..."? actually, now that i think about it, that sounds funny, like a goofy band name. reminds me of the album title "we are the meatmen and you suck!" run with it!

Paddy (Nathan Adler's partner) Is interrogating Leon Blank, who has been accused of murdering 14 year old Baby Grace. He's calling him Spaceboy (an intimidation tactic), and using many other intimidation tactics. "Do you like girls or boys? It's confusing these days!" Is an attempt to emasculate him, to intimidate him, make him emotionally weak. The guy who posted something similar to thsi above hit the nail right on the head. This isn't a "Farewell to Ziggy", it's a part of the storyline for Bowie's concept album (a damn genius concept album at that!)

This song, (to me) is about running away into fantasy from love

I think the line "this chaos is killing me" is reffering to the trajetys and fakeness of romance, and the abuse and actualy very bad things associated with love romance or relationships. such as homophobia (Do you like girls or boys?), It also suggests that this is someone who has became lost and distressed in all this (dont you want to be free), And that he can escape into a space themed fantasy world (Bye Bye Love, Hello Spaceboy)

But It also suggests that running into a fantasy world or pure logic, is dangerous (Moondust will cover you), and it warns him on what he may become

Love the Pagan's Mind version of this song, but the original is always the best. right?

Right!

Could it be the third part of Major Tom? Totally confused and destroyed by the chaos of society of modern times?

My Interpretation
Cover art for Hallo Spaceboy lyrics by David Bowie

The thing I love about 1. Outside is that you really have to think about the lyrics on some of the songs. I think that particular track is supposed to be sung by the character Paddy, a colleague of Detective Nathan Adler. I also think that it is directed towards the character Leon Blank, who has been accused of murder.

I think that Paddy is either tailing Leon to compile a profile on him or interrogating him. In the former interpretation, Leon has been released, but Paddy is have a stake out to keep an eye on Leon at The Motel (the next track on the album). He's trying to get inside Leon's mind to figure out if he is really the culprit, but can't figure it out.

In the latte interpretation, Paddy is interrogating Leon and trying to misdirect him through different approaches. "Spaceboy, you're sleepy now, Your silhouette is so stationary" is an attack on Leon's psychological fatigue, suggesting that he might soon break. "And I want to be free, Don't you want to be free?" is Paddy asking Leon to help his investigation to catch the culprit. "Do you like girls or boys? It's confusing these days" is Paddy attacking Leon's sexuality to prey on his weakness.
