Bathysphere Lyrics
When I was seven
I told my mother
To take me to the bay
And put me on a ship
Silver swordfish, eel electric
I can feel or dream down here
oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh oh
If the water should cut my line
If the water should cut my life
If the water should cut my mind
Set me free
I don't care
I want to live in a bathysphere
When I was seven
My father said to me,
"But you can't swim."
And I've never dreamed
Of the sea again
oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh
If the water should cut my life
If the water should cut my line
If the water should cut my mind
Set me free
I don't care
I want to live in a bathysphere
I told my mother
To take me to the bay
And put me on a ship
I can feel or dream down here
oh oh oh oh oh
If the water should cut my life
If the water should cut my mind
Set me free
I don't care
I want to live in a bathysphere
My father said to me,
"But you can't swim."
And I've never dreamed
Of the sea again
oh oh oh oh
If the water should cut my line
If the water should cut my mind
Set me free
I don't care
I want to live in a bathysphere

I really, really love this song... it's so haunting and emotional, and I can't really describe how it makes me feel. I simply can't get enough of it, and it paints a very vivid picture in my head- almost like a fairy tale.
i love the line "my father said to me, 'but you can't swim' and i've never dreamed of the sea again" it's great how i think everyone can relate to that.
smog did this song too...does anyone know who the song was originally by? im just curious.
I think the original was by Smog.
This is a Smog song, originally. She dated Bill Callahan for awhile, and covered a few of his songs. (See: Red Apples)
PS -- I love Cat Power, but the Smog version of this song is actually a lot better. She really stripped it down.
is it just me with a weird download, or does this track actually have an annoying high pitched electronic noise running throughout the entire song?
apart from that it's great. i've tried to enjoy this noise as some sort of accompanying instrument, but it's just balls.
Yeah, the beeping is there. It sounds just like the beeping from Bowie's Andy Warhol to me, only faster.

the live at the black cat 1998 version of this song is AMAZING. soulseek it.
this song is so ridiculously amazing
I prefer Smog's original, but it's still a good song. And the Cat Power changes to the lyrics are distinct and do add something to it, if only a little more poetry.
And to karma sutured, yeah, the song does have an electric noise in it. Supposed to bring a science fiction feel to the song, I guess.
