Hate a lot of things
But I love a few things
And you are one of them
Hard to believe
After all of these years
But you are one of them
Walk down the street
I'm thinking
Everybody move along
I've got a sad-hearted needing
To belong
Nevertheless
It's all the mess you made
But I can't let it go
Walk down the street
I'm thinking
Look at all the ants in a farm
I've got a sad-hearted feeling
To harm
Hate a lot of things
But I love a few things
And you are one of them
But I love a few things
And you are one of them
After all of these years
But you are one of them
I'm thinking
Everybody move along
I've got a sad-hearted needing
To belong
It's all the mess you made
But I can't let it go
I'm thinking
Look at all the ants in a farm
I've got a sad-hearted feeling
To harm
But I love a few things
And you are one of them

Yeah, in his memoir E confirms that this song is about his mom:
"...It felt good to acknowledge my complicated relationship with my mom, but also to know that I didn't have to be mad at her forever for some of my problems in life that may have resulted from my childhood."
E is basically watching the world around him and sees it as an ant farm which he isn't part of. He is just looking at everything and feels out of place. He has a yearning to be with someone.
From the placement in the album, it's pretty clear it's about his troubled relationship with his dying mom, ergo "hard to believe after all of these years." The thing that gets me about this song is that, after it's over, you can hear E's physical emotional release, with Lisa Germano simply responding, "Wow." It's such a powerful and intimate moment, and they kept it on the record for those people who can catch it and have had similar emotions.

Great song. He wrote it for his girlfriend...he feels a need to belong but his girlfriend keeps him going.
it is such a beautiful, beautiful song
I dont think its about his gf, honestly, i think its about God.
"hard to believe after all of this time that you are one of them," he tried to hate God like he hates everything else, but he gave up on that.
"it's all the mess you made, but I can let it go." That's what I think. The world is all the mess God made, but get over it.
not even God, so much, just whatever the hell created the world
I think it's about himself.
This song (and several more by Eels) is great background noise for some of my more misanthropic moods. Sometimes you just have to say F#%$ it!
