You Can Still Be Free Lyrics

Cool breeze and autumn leaves
Slow motion daylight
A lone pair of watchful eyes
Oversee the living
Feel the presence all around
A tortured soul
A wound unhealing
NO regrets or promises
The past is gone
But you can still be free
If time will set you free

Time now to spread your wings
To take to flight
The life endeavor
Aim for the burning sun
You're trapped inside
But you can still be free
If time will set you free
But it's a long long way to go

Keep moving way up high
You see the light
It shines forever
Sail through the crimson skies
The purest light
The light that sets you free
If time will set you free

Sail through the wind and rain tonight
You're free to fly tonight
And you can still be free
If time will set you free
And going higher than mountain tops
And go high the wind won't stop
And go high
Free to fly tonight
Free to fly tonight

This song is about an experience Daniel had when he was young (though, of course, Darren wrote the song). A couple was arguing at their house and the man ended up shooting himself in their backyard. For a long time after that the family would get the feeling that there was someone else in a room with them, and Daniel often saw the same bird. He made up the story that it was the man asking for forgiveness. And now we have this song. Later on, it came to also have meaning for the death of Darren's PA's father, who he always dedicated it to at shows (along with anyone who ever felt lost).

@Savagedstar83 Oh wow, so glad I found this. Man... I've been going through some major Savage Garden reminiscing lately but it's a bummer because it feels like so much has dried up, or I just can't find it anymore. I remember them release a track-by-track blurb or paragraph on the website years and years ago. I wonder if anyone's collected or held onto any of this stuff.

This is one of the best written songs I've ever heard in my life. If you've heard the story behind how it was written, it seems much more significant. It was inspired by the death of a person, and how the writer feels that the person's soul can't move on and meet peace. Instead, it's staying where it shouldn't be, brooding on the past and wanting forgiveness that it will never get.

I love this song. Very well written. I don't really have much to say on it - Megs hits the nail on the head. Thanks Megs.

I've always loved this song. Megs is right about why it was written, which makes it even more inspiring. & like snufkin said, play this one while you're driving on the highway, especially at night, & see how it makes you feel. It's very moving. "You see the light, it shines forever. Sail through the crimson skies, the purest light, the light that sets you free...& go higher than mountaintops, & go high like the wind don't stop, & go high. Free to fly tonight..."

It was perfectly explained by Savagedstar83...The good thing about it, it's that it can be not only about death, but about being lost...so I could relate to it myself and think: "The past is gone, but you can still be free..." Forgive yourself, and move on... I heard girls with bulimia or eating diseases used to relate to it, and that's totally feausible.

Darren's voice in hear is unbelievable beautiful and carries you away. "And go high, like the wind, don't stop..."

I'm only sorry that this stunning song will remain an undescovered gem for most people out there in the world.
