The Red Shoes Lyrics

Oh she move like the Diva do
I said "I'd love to dance like you."
She said "just take off my red shoes
Put them on and your dream'll come true
With no words, with no song
You can dance the dream with your body on
And this curve, is your smile
And this cross, is your heart
And this line, is your path

Oh it's gonna be the way you always thought it would be
But it's gonna be no illusion
Oh it's gonna be the way you always dreamt about it
But it's gonna be really happening to ya
Really happening to ya
Really happening to ya"

Oh the minute I put them on
I knew I had done something wrong
All her gifts for the dance had gone
It's the red shoes, they can't stop dancing, dancing
And this curve, is your smile
And this cross, is your heart
And this line, is your path

"Oh it's gonna be the way you always thought it would be
But it's gonna be no illusion
Oh it's gonna be the way you always dreamt about it
But it's gonna be really happening to ya"

She gotta dance, she gotta dance
And she can't stop 'till them shoes come off
These shoes do, a kind of voodoo
They're gonna make her dance 'till her legs fall off

Feel your hair come tumbling down
Feel your feet start kissing the ground
Feel your arms are opening out
And see your eyes are lifted to God
With no words, with no song
I'm gonna dance the dream
And make the dream come true
I'm gonna dance the dream
And make the dream come true

She gotta dance, she gotta dance
And she can't stop 'till them shoes come off
These shoes do, a kind of voodoo
They're gonna make her dance 'till her legs fall off
Call a doctor, call a priest
They're gonna whip her up like a helicopter

Really happening to ya
Really happening to ya

You gotta dance....

I can't help but think that this song was Kate's rueful meditation on fame at the time (early 1990's). Kate had suffered many personal losses, yet she had to continue making music. She was even planning to tour back then.

Regardless, this song came before Kate's 12-year break from releasing any new music. It's almost impossible for me to listen to this song without imagining Kate - wishing she were anywhere else but trapped inside a studio, working to complete an album.

This is the song from the film, 'The Line, The Cross And The Curve' which Kate actually starred in. In the film, the red shoes are a pair of shoes that the main character who is a dancer uses for her big performances. I'm not sure what Kate's role is as i haven't actually seen the film (But would like to) but that's where it came from and that's why she's going on about shoes.

Actually this is based on a Grimm Brother's fairytale called 'The Red Shoes'. >_>

Actually it's a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. I recommend the 1948 film of the same name for anyone who is thirsty for a brilliant piece of art.

The film is my all time favorite movie. The song and the film are based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale in which a girl puts on a pair of red hoes that keep her dancing until she falls down dead.

This is an obvious reference to the Grimm Brothers story of the Red Shoes. It actually says in the song;

"She gotta dance, she gotta dance And she can't stop 'till them shoes come off These shoes do, a kind of voodoo They're gonna make her dance 'till her legs fall off"

In the story, this girl gets these shoes. She finds out that she can't take the shoes off her feet. So everywhere she goes, she dances, and she can't control the dancing. In many of the versions of this story, she dies by burning to death because her dancing was so passionate that it set her alight. In others, she danced so much that her legs fell off.

My Opinion

@Astarte24 this is the perfect allegory for our lives now. Our red shoes are the carbon rich climate destroying lifestyle. We cannot stop destroying our world without cutting them off. But dare not do this and we keep dancing until we drop dead.
