Walk Straight Down the Middle Lyrics

Can't move my arms,
Can't move my legs.
Can't say no,
I can't say yes.
Can't help myself.
I need your help.

(We go)
"Oh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just can't move?"
We're calling out for Middle Street.

"Oh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just can't move?"
We hang on to every line,
And walk straight down the middle of it.

He thought he was gonna die,
But he didn't.
She thought she just couldn't cope,
But she did.
We thought it would be so hard,
But it wasn't
It wasn't easy, though!

Can't say yes,
I can't say no.
Can't begin,
Can't let go
Help me now.

(We go)
"Ooh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just can't move?"
We're calling out for Middle Street.

"Ooh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just can't move?"
We hang on to every line,
And walk straight down the middle of it.

He thought he was gonna die,
But he didn't.
She thought she could never cope,
But she did.
We thought it was all over,
But it wasn't...
It hadn't started yet.

And walk straight down the middle of it.
And walk straight down the middle of it.
Calling out for Middle Street.
Calling out for Middle Street,
Walking straight down the middle of it.

I think the best part of the lyrics for me is: "We thought it was all over But it wasnt.......it hadn't started yet"

It's strange how the mind can respond in stressful and difficult times. Sometimes you find yourself with a power unknown to yourself, coming from your gut a will to survive. And other times you find yourself nailed to the ground, in shock, unable to move or to act. For me that's what this song is about.

I think it's about being in a dark place and getting through it by not being scared but just facing up to it, being strong, walking straight down the middle of it.

I think it's about how one can get things done, even when seemingly impossible, when one 'walks the middle street', when one gets its own life in balance. It seems to me a very deep song, with a message of spiritual development, through one's many lives - "We thought it was all over But it wasnt.......it hadn't started yet." one thinks it's life ends at his death, but it's just a doorway onto the next one.

but, well, it's just IMHO, kind of an underrated song too

My Interpretation

I think it's about interpretations of words. In particular, it's about a strained relationship where both people have to constantly watch what they say around each other.

I've dealt with this with argumentative people, where if I say something that doesn't quite match my meaning, the other person will take that and derail the entire conversation with it. Like for example, if I say "you always make fun of me" and the other person would argue that it's not true because the other person isn't making fun of me 100% of the time. I think that that kind of thing is what this song is about.

"We hang on to every line, And walk straight down the middle of it."

In other words, they get really hung up on the words that they say to each other ("every line") and they have to be careful to only say exactly what they mean. They have to "walk straight down the middle" of the meanings of their words.

This is backed up by the part of the song where she says

"He thought he was gonna die, but he didn't."

If you're going through a stressful time and you say "I think I'm gonna die!" you probably don't literally mean you're going to die right there at that moment. Similarly,

"She thought she just couldn't cope, but she did"

If you're going through a stressful time and you say "I think I just can't cope" you probably don't mean that you literally, physically can't.

And then the parts where she says things like "can't say no, can't say yes" and "what do we do, now we just can't move" refer to the fact that you reach an impasse if you have to keep watching what you say. It's difficult to reach any kind of resolution of conflict in a relationship if you are both on the defensive all the time.

So yeah. I think that it's about a strained relationship where they keep arguing, and they have to be careful to only say exactly what they mean, because they keep arguing over the meanings of their words.

I feel this song is about anxiety and struggling to cope being out in the open, surrounded by people and trying to calm yourself
