Gods Of War Lyrics

Feelin' like it's all over, feelin' like there's no love
Feelin' like it's not easy, breathin' life in the dust
On a countdown to zero take a ride on the nightmare machine
There ain't gonna be heroes
There ain't gonna be anything
Oh
Here it comes, here comes the night
Here it comes, hell in the night
Here it comes, here comes the night
When we all fall down
When we walk into silence
When we shadow the sun
When we surrender to violence
Oh
Then the damage is done
Put away that gun!
I don't wanna be there
I don't wanna be anywhere
Oh!
Here it comes, here comes the night
Here it comes, hell in the night
Here it comes, here comes the night
That's right!
We're fightin' for the gods of war but what the hell we fightin' for?
We're fightin' with the gods of war but I'm a rebel
And I ain't gonna fight no more no way!
On a countdown to zero
Take a ride on the nightmare machine
There ain't gonna be heroes
(Whoa)
There ain't gonna be anything
No!
Here it comes, here comes the night
Here it comes, hell in the night
Here it comes, here comes the night
Don't ya know that's right!
We're fightin' for the gods of war but what the hell we fightin' for?
We're fightin' with the gods of war
And (a) I ain't gonna fight no more
(Stop)
Stop fightin' for the gods of war
(Stop fightin' for the gods of war)
Yeah what the hell we fightin' for?
(What in the hell we fightin' for?)
We're fightin' with the gods of war
Heavy!

I'm not a huge Leopard fan, but I do remember this song came out, or the album, I guess I should say, I don't believe this wasn't a single, I thought it was pretty cool back when I was like 10, 11, whenever this came out, anyway, I remember thinking this song was pretty cool, now that I'm older, songs like this irritate me. I don't know where Brits got off with this holier than though attitude that America is the route of destroying the world when they are (and always have been, post-indepdence times, for the most part) been are biggest alli and in cahoots. Lot of British bands have done this, from varios genres, Iron Maiden and Midnight Oil, I think it was, concering crimes to Indians, it's annoying. Where did they think white anglican americans learned this behavior?? (And I may be white, but I'm far from Anglican). They should look back at their own barbabic history, like or not, it's the route of ours.

Phenomenal song. No other song will be quite like it. Where did those patriotic Reagan years go?

My Opinion

This is my favorite song by Def Leppard. I love every damn thing about it. From the guitar riffs to the vocals to the lyrics. This song is basically about the Cold War and tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States.

good song with cool speeches of Ronald Regan included, good intro as well and agreed with Teufel on what its meaning is

This song takes me back to the 80's more than other Def Leppard songs, many people thought the Arms race would end with Reagan blowing up the world.

I think it's about war and people playing god with it. Like how with nuclear weapons we have the ability to destroy the world and doing "god's work"

This song, according to Joe Elliot, is about, "Man's word on the street about [of course the Russian missiles] and if something was so dangerous and powerful why set them off?" It's a song and it has NOTHING to do with Indians or anything, chill out.

ip410; evidently you misunderstood the song. Yes, Def Leppard acknowledges they're Britain's biggest allies. Hence: "We're fighting with the gods of war". Their concern is the purpose of the alliance, ie "What the hell we fighting for?". It IS a legitimate question. I can't see how you criticise them for asking it. The Iron Maiden comment is also uncalled for: Run for the Hills is merely a narrative. Two thirds of it are in support of the genocide of the Indians, as you may recall. It's no more critical than the Trooper is of the Crimean war; the British and American crimes are treated equally. Perhaps you should get your head out of your ass and follow your own advice: learn from history rather than condemn its retelling.

i seem to remember some comments from the band saying it was about what was in the news growing up, such as conflict in Northern Ireland; a war about religion, hence the Gods of War title.

Song Meaning
